Camden wrote:While we're on the subject of Wiggins, how did he not shoot a single free throw tonight? His ability to draw fouls is gone this year -- let alone actually making them when he gets there (63.3%). Attempts are down from 7.0 to 6.6 and 4.0 this season. That's not the trend we had hoped for.
Wiggins is shooting a career low on % of attempts within 3 feet this year at 22% of his shots from that close. His previous low was 29%. He still shoots the same amount of long 2s, but his 3pt attempt % is at a career high. Wish he would keep that 3pt attempt % the same but get back to high % at the rim instead of the long 2s.
Unless his 3P efficiency improves, I'm afraid he might be better off attacking the closeout and trying to get to the rim rather than to keep shooting them at a sub-33% clip. His ability to get to the line and make 75% of them was a large pillar in helping his overall efficiency. It's no longer there.
We are going to agree on this one, I am fine with him still shooting the 3s because we need him to be a threat out there and at least his % is not going down even when shooting more of them (what he needs to improve on). But he is shooting a career high 70% at the rim this year. I wish we would run him out of the high post more because in my opinion that is where he plays his best because it is one dribble and you are at the rim, it is where he seems most comfortable taking his jumper, and he can physically impose his will. He was good out of the high post last year (I just loved that 2 high post action last year, I have a problem)
In the end we might regret not trading Wiggins instead of Lavine. I like both players a lot, and I think they both will be very solid NBA players. But it is so hard to compare how player X would do than player Y in certain situations. Now if Lavine was on this team instead of Wiggins, he would be the third option and how would he do if he was asked to stand in the corner like Wiggins is. We are looking at different roles, Lavine on the Bulls is asked to do almost everything for them down the clutch and damn was he good tonight and good for him.
Like everyone else has said we need to run shit in the last 5 minutes of the game, I am fine with Jimmy taking the shots but lets run him off screens, lets post him up, lets get more ball movement so teams can't load up on him like they did tonight leaving Tyus open and one possession where they left Wiggins wide open and Wiggins missed the open 3.
I don't think we are far off being a really good team, but we have some pretty bad late game execution and I think that is fixable. Like even tonight we had a wide open 3 by our best 3 point shooter and he missed it. I will take that shot 10 out of 10 times.
Don't you think with Lavine's handle Thibs would use him more rather than a diet of 100% Butler late in close games? Lavine can get where he wants and still possess the ball once he gets there unlike every Wolves player not named Butler!
I thought it was idiotic last season when Thibs would put the ball in Wiggins hands to run the half-court offense when he had LaVine, who has always been a MUCH better ball-handler and shooter than Wiggins. That's an indictment of Thibs as head coach. Trading LaVine instead of Wiggins and giving up more assets in the process is an indictment of Thibs PBO.
Who was the better head coach tonight, Thibs or Fred?
I am just saying, if we make that trade Wiggins instead of Lavine, we might not be in the playoffs right now, with Lavine coming off an ACL injury. I am not going to blame Thibs for not taking that risk.
In the end we still dont know. Mad props to Zach though, still one of my favorite players in the League.
Trading Wiggins rather than LaVine would have allowed us to keep Dunn. That, in turn, would have allowed us to put the $19 million used on Teague to better use. We might not be 4th place now, but I think we'd be in playoff contention and Zach's return would have solidified our hold on a playoff seed. All conjecture I know. But I've always thought Zach was the better prospect. He's always been a much better 3-point shooter and free throw shooter. He's also always been a much better ball-handler, which is so critical to being a good NBA wing. So the fact that we could have traded the inferior player (Wiggins) while giving up fewer other assets to get Butler tells me that Thibs should have dealt Wiggins instead.
I'm just not impressed with Thibs as PBO. He hasn't done anything insanely stupid. But he hasn't done the really smart things that you see from the best organizations.

Who cares about this year. I couldn't care less if we make the playoffs and get ousted vs missing it. What matters is winning a Championship in 2-3-4 years from now.
I hated the trade because we were selling out for the short term upside versus the long term. Cause I always thought Zach would be far superior to Wiggins over time and he'd be the key piece to a Championship team. It just seems to be coming to fruition too, which makes me more PO'd.
Now that said, I'm not around the guys all the time. I wonder if Thibs had information on that Zach would bolt for LA or somewhere else. So as much as I hated the trade, I got to look at all sides.

I won't argue to the death anyone who wants to argue Wiggins over Lavine or vise versa. I like both players. I just didn't like the risk we would have taken with Lavine coming off an ACL injury where he uses his athleticism so much in his game. Now he is looking like he is going to recovering from that nicely and I am very happy to see that. It would have been a gigantic risk.
Also don't think Thibs would have run with Dunn this year, first off Dunn was trash last year on the offensive end, also it is being widely reported that Dunn and Thibs did not like each other at all, and Dunn was a bad lockeroom guy last year.
Again there is no point in debating this topic because there is no argument I could make or you could make that would change our minds on this subject (What is perfectly fine, I understand both sides to the argument and I believe you do also).

Wolves haven't been in the playoffs for 13 years? Honestly I'm thrilled to see them get there. The Wolves aren't like the Vikings where it's championship or bust at this point. They need to get some big game experience under their belt before title aspirations should be expected.

I doubt Thibs had any sense that Zach would leave. The Lakers have had their sights set on other players (PG, LeBron). Thibs simply thought Wiggins was better. He was wrong. He preferred Patton over John Collins. So far, he was wrong about that. The Lakers front office spotted Kuzma but Thibs didn't. Thibs thought Teague was worth $19 million a year for 3 years, giving up Rubio and passing on signing Collison for $10 million per year. I'm not impressed by Thibs the PBO. He's not in the David Kahn idiot category, but he hasn't distinguished himself as particularly good. Now if he signs Rose, then maybe he'll start apparoaching Kahn territory. :).

How many more years can a team go without making the playoffs, we added a team USA player and we probably don't add 2 of the top 5 free agent signings in wolves history without Butler. Its not like we gave up every young asset in the trade. In the end we needed to start having a winning culture and I honestly don't think it was ever going to happen if we would have kept the Lavine/Wiggins/Towns core. Now Wiggins vs Lavine is debatable but it is still a debate, especially coming off an injury.

I agree it's nicer to make it, and if you swapped out Wiggins for Zach in the trade it doesn't mean the Wolves don't make it either.
My point is, that the Wolves are not winning the Championship this season. So the end result will be the same. What matters is next year and the years after. That's where I expect to see LaVine be the AllStar and Wiggins just Wiggins. Unless Wiggins turns his game up several notches shooting wise 3P and FT%, I just don't see how we will compete down the road. It kills us to see him take a step back this season.

He added the 2nd best player in Twolves history. Added 2 of the best 5 (if not better) free agents in Wolves history. Patton is still way to hard to tell if the Patton pick was good or not, I mean Collins would not be playing right now for the Wolves either. And it is such hindsight with the Collison deal, who knows if he wanted to be a wolf or not if he wanted to. So I am going to use hindsight and say that God we didnt Collison because he got hurt.

Thibs is turning out to be a fool on multiple levels. I cannot disagree at this point. The lack of defense on the road is ridiculous. How much do you blame the players and how much the coach? It certainly couldn't be any worse with anyone else, I don't think.
