Just curious...what do people mean when they talk about "the mainstream media"? I hear it all the time, usually on quite conservative radio or TV, and I often wonder what it means. What is the mainstream media, and what media would not be considered mainstream?

ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and LA Times.

Exactly two of these entities don't have a liberal bias: Fox and the Wall Street Journal editorial pages.

Looks like from the website masks will be required at that event but that's everywhere in the area.

Wait are you going to Vegas next week? It's kinda hilarious that event you mentioned lines up exactly with the NBA summer league. :)

I won't be, but my wife will be. They changed the masking guidelines 2 weeks ago and now it requires a mask. I have not been to vegas since March. I don't remember if mask were required or not then which to me is interesting how fast your mind can let go of something.

This really seems like it might be money well spent. It is lobbyist money being spent to help make America a little better at the very least. Obviously, this is poor journalism because pictures would be helpful and confirm if it was resources allocated properly.

Interesting taking away a person's voting rights for 5 years. I am all for taking away voter rights to people as punishment for violent attacks, murders, spousal/child abuse, human trafficking, or destruction of property. It just seems maybe this guy was singled out. Did we revoke voting rights for any of the rioters?

No idea.

In this case, maybe it could have even been part of a deal? After all, the judge dismissed the charges for assault with a dangerous weapon and assault on a police officer while resisting arrest.

Pretty good effort, Q, but it turns out there is actually polling on this. Pew Research recently asked a representative sample of Americans whether various media were "mainstream media" or not, and only 7 of them were selected by more than 50% of the sample:

ABC, CNN, NYT, MSNBC, Fox News, WSJ and the New York Post. Note that three of the 7 (Fox, WSJ and the NY Post) have a conservative bias, while the other 4 have a liberal bias. (I suspect Rush Limbaugh would have made it 4-4 if he were still alive based on his massive audience). Quite balanced when you look at what the sample chose.

I actually think the practical usage of "mainstream media" is "any widespread media outlet that expresses a view different from mine". I find it ironic that Fox News and Sean Hannity (radio) use this term in a derisive manner frequently, but in the next breath tout how large their audience is! Seems that they are also the mainstream media they are so critical of. Sid Hartman used to talk dismissively of "the media" while conveniently ignoring he was one of the most powerful media forces in our community!

Turns out the group that most often criticizes the media is....the media.

No doubt. CNN and Fox love nothing more than to rip on each other. Both are biased and profit from creating outrage against the "other side". I fault them along with social media algorithms programmed to feed folks information that confirms their own biases with a lot of the divisiveness in this country, including the crackpots and conspiracy theorists.

Go to the Yahoo! news feed which sources a bunch of its content from a broad array of "news" outlets. It's a depressing cross-section of outrage peddling, soft porn, and bad-faith political takes.

The only nit-pick I will say about your observation on Fox/Hannity audience size is that it almost proves their point, but perhaps not for the reasons they state. The fact is there are a lot more "mainstream" sources competing for like-minded liberal eyeballs and ears than there are conservative sources. So Fox is generally able to dominate ratings because CNN, MSNBC, NPR and the major networks are competing against each other for largely the same target audience. Same goes for the late night shows - Colbert, Kimmel, Seth Meyers et al generally target the same group of people and dilute each other's ratings as a result.

I can't think of another time where I have seen voters rights revoked on a case like this. It would seem this would be something far left or right would lose it over.

Maybe. It's definitely weird. But would that be a bit kneejerk reactionary considering we don't know the actual details?

Like I said... maybe it was introduced by the guy's legal team as part of a deal. But if he really is a goofball political guy... it would be a brilliant move to then use it to rouse the base.
