Because once that happens the bullseye is solely on Rosas. It's one of the few cards he has left to play. Once used, he is officially on the clock.

Usually. But don't undersell how quickly the pandemic + KAT + injuries + less time for the young guys to gel = worst team in the league status angle will be used.

Despite proclamations about "no excuses"... those excuses will most definitely be leaked.

Bingo and Bingo on both of those replies.

Fuck this team. I cannot even watch them. Maybe the most dysfunctional I have ever seen the Wolves. No heart, passion, direction. The #1 pick year to get KAT they were at least trying hard, they just weren't talented. Now we are supposed to be talented but they are not even fighting. And we give up the pick to a recent dynasty. What the hell is going on.

It's a legitimate reality that losing your best player will result in less wins. Especially a team built around undrafted FA's and crappy vets like Rubio and Davis. Rosas fault.

It's completely homerish to think a team like this can win with the way it's constructed without it's only true star player. That falls on Rosas, but at the same time this is MN. Expecting this team to perform and win regularly with a young unproven roster is ridiculous. As being MN we are not an attractive landing spot for quality vets. So while Rosas' roster construction has been poor, it's somewhat understandable too. Ryan has been given 2-7 and playing against pocket Aces. Wins and losses come down mostly to the players. Vandy hits his FT's and we win. Edwards makes one more bucket we win. DLO doesn't one and one and hit a shot we win. You can go on and on. The players are NOT good enough.

I'm just catching up to this thread now, so I have the advantage of hindsight. But here's one thing I know for sure...an upbeat post about DLO having a positive plus/minus midgame is never going to age well...resist the urge! Only Okogie's -14 kept DLO from once again leading us in worst +/-.

I recognize that Edward's plus 13 is an excellent example of why +/- is not reliable in a small sample size. But when players like DLO and LaVine consistently lead their team in worst +/-. we have to notice, right?

Yet there are times where he's the only guy out there that can seemingly make a shot. Someone needs to put the ball in the basket. I guess the question in these LaVine/DLO discussions is what happens when you replace with a more well rounded 2-way player who is less potent as a scorer?

What if instead of DLO we had Monte Morris or DeJounte Murray as a starting PG - solid PGs that are not known for any one strength or weakness - would we be better, worse, or the same?

Yes. That's sort of where I'm going with some of my pushback on your +/- take.

Jamal Crawford was wildly inefficient with the Wolves. And he very definitely helped them win games. You need a guy who can score who can carry a team for stretches. The rub is if you play a guy like Crawford vs. other starters. Or make a guy like LaVine a #1 focal point of a team. You need to be able to temper their impact when it's negative.

They're great 6th men and complementary second or third fiddles. But they most definitely have value. An entire team of Tyus Jones-like players just can't use their skills the same way without the Crawfords and LaVines in the world.

I'm going to leave DeRozen out of this discussion and only focus on the three guys who have played for the Wolves: Crawford, LaVine and DLO, because I find them similar in so many ways. I admit I have cheered loudly for all three as they made big shots in the 4th quarter. And I have torn my hair out at times watching them flail away on defense. I'm wondering if we can all agree on these two statements:

1) DLO, Crawford and LaVine are elite scorers who have won a lot of games for their respective teams.

2) BUT- because they are all notoriously poor +/- players, often leading their teams in negative rating despite their elite scoring, it seems mathematically logical that they have also lots a lot of games for their respective teams- and perhaps far more than they have won.

[Note: So why has Rosas filled the roster with THREE guards who seem to be cut from that cloth? I don't know. I simply don't know... other than shooting fish in a barrel hoping for the next James Harden type player.]

FNG, I can agree with your two statements, but the question is what is the theoretical alternative and does that lead to better, the same, or worse results? If we replace DLO with Kris Dunn, who is a vastly superior defender but a vastly inferior shooter and scorer, are we better off, the same, or worse?

I'd argue we might be worse, all else being equal - I mean now the floor spacing is really hosed up and literally no one outside of KAT can create offense for us.

Now, if we replace DLO with Monte Morris, a fairly balanced 2-way PG that is by no means a star, are we better or worse? I'd argue we are better. And then there is an extra $15-20M to go spend on someone else to help make the rest of the team better.

There are folks who look at this much closer than I do, but the problem with DLO and LaVine isn't that they are harmful NBA players. It's that they are overvalued, overpaid, and given too much responsibility as a result, thus exposing their weaknesses to the detriment of the team.

Replace DLO with Jrue Holiday and we are much better. And I agree with where you are going with this.

McDaniels looked pretty good in this game. At this point I kinda want to see him get more run.

J-mac started to look like the guy we say last year. He has been kinda meh up to this point part of which I would attribute to not being with the team for his holdout.

That loss kinda sucked and was an unpleasant want to finish up watching a handful of Wolves games this evening.
