Long and Kahns - I think you're both right. Kahns is right about the shortage of open roster spots. But Long's right about the cap problem and I don't think he included the cap hold for our draft pick. I doubt KG will re-sign with us for the MLE. I doubt he'll accept less than $10 million per season for one or two years. So trading for him allows the Wolves to re-sign KG without regard to the cap and still have the MLE for someone else. No doubt the Wolves will be over the cap next season. The trick will be staying u der the luxury tax threshold.

Lip, if he won't accept less than 10 million per season we better not have KG on the team next year. Are you kidding me? The board is starting to go insane over this KG is God shit.

Jesus. Let's all hope you're wrong about that, Lip. That'd be absurd on our end.

Cool - I'm not saying KG SHOULD get that much and I haven't lost my head in the KG euphoria. I'm just being realistic when it comes to KG. HE's always driven a hard bargain in contract negotiations. I just don't think he'll play for the MLE. And I think Flip knows it, which is why he traded for him. Flip's not an idiot. If he thought he could sign KG this summer for the MLE, that's what he would have done. And I don't think Flip traded for him just to generate PR or get mentoring the next 27 games. In fact, at the forum last week, Flip said he doesn't put much stock in carry-over from one season to the next. Those were his exact words.
Hope I'm wrong. But we'll see.

Lip if he's going to own the team, it's in his best interest not to pay himself too much,. If I was KG I'd take the vet minimum and realize the franchise is worth more the less he makes.

Cool - I don't disagree with you. But past experience tells me KG doesn't think that way when it comes to money.

I live in CT and get all the BKN games so I have seen KG bout as much as anyone this year. What we are getting is an older version of KG, he still has his jump shot, leadership, communication on the floor and pretty much battles with any big in the league and does well. However he is slower and less athletic than he used to be and BKN was playing him limited minutes and even resting him on some nights.
KG has literally mastered the art of pushing, grabbing, and tangling up his opponent with out getting called for fouls. He frustrates the crap out of PF's most recently B. Griffin prior to his injury. He also dealt with Z-Bo and M. Gasol just fine recently, so as a defender he's still above average. His slower speed and athleticism though has affected his ability to rotate and block shots like he use to be capable of. BKN didn't post KG up much not sure if they thought that would wear him out quicker but I think he can still provide some easy baskets out of the post.
I don't understand the comments against this trade, sure we wanted more value out the deal. But consider what we achieved and its a win for both teams. BKN wanted a here and now player and Thad mixes things up to try and salvage their season #BKN sucks!
We dodged what I thought was going to be a horrific move by not signing Thad long term :)
KG and G. Neal bring CHAMPIONSHIP experience, this has been called old school move on these boards? Yeah so what? Bring in vets that have played in the biggest possible games and who still own valuable skills to teach the kids how to act in the gym, off the court, and with the media. I think both players will be brought back next year and with a high draft pick who knows how good we may be next year.
We opened up time for possible long term solutions AB & Payne, though I think Dieng should be molded into a PF/C. So now we are giving playing time to our future rather than Thad = win. We all wanted more value for Thad but the market showed us that the league as a whole didn't value him with his current contract all that much.
So many people are going to jump all over this and point to KG's #'s and say "See told ya he's washed up or that was a bad trade" but consider what we lost? Not that great of an asset, the real loss was trading for Thad in the first place.
The most underrated part of this trade is the energy and synergy that Target Center will have. Having KG back in the building will excite the crowd even if he's merely on the bench waving his lengthy arms telling fans to get louder. I suspect this synergy to pay dividends two fold by motivating and energizing the whole team, maybe allowing us to see a few big wins and KG blasts from the past moments. His intensity is infectious and this underrated synergy is exactly what we are missing.

Terrific post, TU, and thanks for the close-up report on KG this year. Very balanced in terms of what he can and cannot still do. Your thoughts completely echo mine on this deal, and I'm looking forward to the impact KG can have on this team...on and off the court.
And I had to smile hearing the Harlan call. He's still good, but he was even better before he went national...almost no filter on the random things that used to come out of his mouth. My son and I still laugh about his call one game when KG was on fire. "KG's going crazy, he's going mad...he's got mad cow disease!"

Meh. Last year we had a pretty decorated roster in terms of team accomplishments. Seriously, Brewer and Barea had NBA rings; Rubio and Pek have won Euroleague titles, which is a big deal over there; Dieng was coming off of an NCAA national title; Brewer won two national titles; Love won an Olympic gold medal. The "championship experience" thing is tough to sell me on when most of these guys have championship experience in various settings. KG has won one NBA title. Heck, Brewer might have played in more big games than KG when you include college!
Where I do buy into the KG hype is how he can help the team defensively. Insofar as defense wins titles, then yeah, I'm on board with the KG train. But the "championship experience" bit is overdone in my opinion.
