Ouch...my first choice in free agency. But I agree 100%...4 years is too much. This signals to me that the Wolves completely understand the implications of a 4-year deal this summer to signing their Big 3...they simply can't offer a 4-year deal this summer if they expect our youngsters to reach their potential and hope to keep them all.

Why wouldn't you want a longer deal for Mahinmi? He's 29. I'd assume he's got 4 or 5 good years. He's the only guy left (other than Horford or Durant) that I am willing to pay more than 12 Million for if necessary. Lets get him.

I really like Mahinmi, but we can probably say goodbye to Dieng eventually if we sign him.

Why? We need three good bigs. I think Dieng wants to be here and he'll probably give us some discount. They all three could fit in here. If we sign Mahinmi and Dieng to contracts between 12-15 Million a year, we'll be fine with the new cap environment.

Some of these max deals seem crazy to me. I mean, don't some of these maxes take up almost 30% of team payroll? Sign three guys at Mike Conley's level and you only have 10% of the cap space left to fill out the other 12 spots on the roster?

The buzzword that describes this big salary cap jump is "disruption." This is a disruption from the cap trajectory, and I'm guessing Gladwellian folks would say that some teams are going to benefit disproportionately from it while others will suffer.

The question I have is, how can we best predict which decisions will pay off, and which decisions will come back to haunt a team?

I think one type of decision that may pay off will be to be ready to pick up good players on good contracts from teams looking to shed salary to sign their own FA. If the Hawks re-sign Horford, guys have mentioned Splitter here, 2 years at 8 million. That's a good deal now. Millsap's got a big contract, 21 million, but only 2 more years so we could shed that cap space to extend our own guys in a couple years. Given Millsap's production, even 21 million is a fair price in the new market, and having him for only 2 more years is actually a benefit.

You know Founierfor 5 years 85 seems like a pretty good deal. Not sure he isn't a better player going forward than Beal (injury issues taken into consideration as well) and he costs 40 million less. Again just as the Magic sort of screw up one thing they get something else right. Kinda reminds me of Memphis when they built their team up.

Exactly Drew, especially to a guy who's never been an all star. A 5 year 150 deal. I'm sure thibs and layden are happy just to sit and watch. I would too.

Those are the type of things you do when you HAVE to and that's where Memphis is they have a window. Personally I could see Memphis failing big time with the age and injury concerns with that roster. It could also come together especially if Parsons is healthy. That's the type of player they have needed for years. I'm sorta both hoping it works out and fails (because Inam a Wolves fan) at the same time

I don't think he is worth that money, but I knew he would get top dollar. Only free agent worth that money is Durant. I guess Memphis didn't have a choice.

I see three levels of decisions with the top echelons of players:

1) Max contracts that are given to players who are truly elite...think Durant, etc.

2) Max contracts that are given to players who are very good and deserve max contracts, but who don't provide great value because they are not at the elite level...think Horford

3) Max contracts given to good players who don't deserve getting the max...think Conley

Teams that make deals in categories 2 and 3 are going to struggle, I think...the Wolves need to avoid max contracts, unless it involves Kevin Durant, and really need to avoid making a foolish deal like a Conley deal.

Sources: Hawks aren't ruling out possibility that they could bring back Al Horford. If he decides to stay, ATL has ways to unload salary.

You would think with them bringing on Howard Sliptter would be a guy they would dump for nothing. Considering what some centers are getting there might be a number of takers.

Would Millsap embrace coming off the bench? Do teams want Splitter? Wolves can dangle Tyus as a fill in for Teague on tiny salary. Could also lighten the protection on the owed pick. Teams like Celtics could make a better offer but would Hawks deal him to a team they directly compete with?

Teague was already traded to Indiana.

That's what I mean. With Teague gone they might want another point guard. Their situation might necessitate a cheap one. Rumor has it the Hawks talked with Phoenix about taking on Millsap for picks so there is a chance.
