The most frightening thing is the twins bigges contract in history is a four-year, $54 million deal to Ervin Santana. You want to know what postion player wise is??? Jason Castro three-year, $24.5 million contract. Thats in the teams history.

That is sad. I don't recall us trading for any big contracts at any point either.

Sorry Bleed I dont know if Cleveland is a comparable team because there always bottom 10 in attendance even when there putting 90 win+ team out there. They're just like the Rays and don't have the resources to keep there guys. This is why there been so many reports the Indians are listening to offers on Lindor.

Indians have the lowest revenue in the divison at 224M. Twins, White Sox, and Tigers all fall in the 265-280M range. I wonder what threshold management is given to work with.

From My time of a scoutt the number is to be around 40-45% of revenues. As for the Payroll revenue and the 46% attendance im assuming this is based off the 2018 attendance and 2019 payroll. Attendace has been down at target field till last year. They average 5,000 more buttsper game in the seats this year then 2018. So I would assume that number to go down around 40% if not lower.

I feel like a broken record saything this but there going to end up with a lower payroll this year then last year. How is this okay??? There payroll last year was 125 million right now before arbitration were sitting at 85 million. Unless they sign a Dondalson type player there going to come in under.

As for chemistry of the team if Wheeler got big contract I dont think its a big deal. Baseball is best indvidual team game there is. Why would Berrios care what Wheeler made hes on track to make that slary plus more in 2 years as long as he handles his buisness on the field. Eddie and Sano are going to make 8-10 mil playing the game they love next year. Then there in line for the pay day. If anything the players hate the system that doesnt allow them to make money early on in there careers not the players for cashing in when they can.

Agreed with jester above. Additionally, you don't think Jose Berrios saw what Zack Wheeler got and smiled? He's arguably been a better, more durable, and more consistent pitcher than Wheeler. That Wheeler contract just set precedent for when Berrios becomes eligible for a new deal.

I can't find 2019 revenue numbers, but based on ticket sales alone they would have drawn in 74M in 2019 vs 2018 63M. So if you lets say revenue moved from 269M in 2018 to 288M in 2019. 43% of revenue was spent on payroll last year. I really doubt the Pohlands are telling them that number needs to go down. I think they are playing wait and see.

They didn't sign Cruz until 1/2/19 and then Gonzalez until 2/25/19 last year. They seem to love these late in FA signings. It will be interesting who they sign. I thought the Lance Lynn and Logan Morrison signings were good at the time, but both backfired and Lance bitched about his contract at every turn.

If we don't get Bumgarner or Donaldson where does it make sense to spend money on this roster? Do you think salaries held them back from making moves during the season last year? Would it make sense to go into the year with 100M payroll and then make a trade that brings on another 20-30M in June/July?

I used to think the Pohlad's were cheap, but the numbers don't support it. Maybe that will change this year., but based on them spending 52% of revenue on the payroll in 2011 I doubt it.

I will say based on the rdont always trust that number because it varys team to team those tv contracts the yankees get from the YES network and the dodgers are worth a lot of money. So yankees spending 33% is kind of different factor compared to the twins. Yes they did spend in 2011 for one/2 yeasr and by 2013 they were down to 81 million. Just look in paytroll rankings below they literally spent for two years when the first go the stadium.

Payroll Rankings
2011 11
2012 12
2013 23
2014 24
2015 20
2016 23
2017 19
2018 21
2019 18
2020 right now 21

Also remember all those years pre 2018 have Joe Mauer Contract. To get back to same payroll as last year it would put them #15 and they have 40 million to get there.

I am assuming the revenue numbers include tickets, tv, merch, ads, and sponsors.

In 2018 the Twins are ranked

21st revenue.

18th in payroll
https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll/2019/

What I don't know is what kind of revenue sharing there is in baseball and it that is counted in revenue.

I would assume Revenue is everything including tv contracts because thats why the yankees number is so low. I get your point that there around the middle spending based on revenues . Yet the reason why there revenue wasn't higher because there were trotting out 100 loss team out for 5 straight years. This town has proved that it will support a winning ball club and thats why I brought up the indians and rays. When they keep having 90 plus win seasons there still are in bottom of attendace. I would bet in 2020 the twins will be a 15 team in revenue.

It is interesting looking at historical revenue. It seems always goes up.
https://www.statista.com/statistics/196669/revenue-of-the-minnesota-twins-since-2006/

Even if attendance went down
https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/attend.shtml

I wonder if the TV contract climbs every year. I have not been following ticket prices to see if there is an offset there. I would love to see Thad's comp plan and bonus structure. What does he truly get paid on?

It's weird to me that Cleveland has such low attendance. If I lived in that area I would have gone to a bunch of games myself and I'm a Twins fan. That was a fun team to keep track of last year. They have some terrific players. I'm gonna have to ask the guy I work with That has a whole bunch of family in Cleveland what the deal is.
