The only thing to take away from this game, positively. Is arby's French Dip sandwich deal hit for the 9th straight time

LOL, Nowell misses his only 3-point attempt. Now shooting something like 12% on 3s. This from a guy whose best skill is shooting. Martin is another guy who is a decent (not great though) shooter almost anywhere except when wearing a Minnesota Timberwolves jersey. He's shooting 26%.

I go back and forth with DLO and Beasley as a future backcourt. I love that either can pull up from 3 and just drain it in people's faces. Willing and able shooters are a rare thing in Minnesota (the key is they have to come to us via trade, since any guard we draft automatically becomes a worse shooter. Some kind of natural law). But neither are great getting into the paint and neither are good defenders. Unless they are hot, this team will struggle because those two do so little else.

I'm here at the game. It should go without saying that Okogie has been a bright spot for the Wolves today in spite of that one lapse.

The problems?

1. Lots of missed shots, including easy layups and free throws;

2. No one even remotely equipped to guard Portzingis

3. Only one good defender, Okogie, on the team;

4. Inferior coaching.

I like DLO, KAT, Beasley and Okogie as a core. But we have to do better than Layman and H-Gomez

I strongly disagree with Okogie being a bright spot today. He has been really bad (not to take away his great play over the last month and a half).

I guess we'll just have to agree to strongly disagree. :) Okogie was a great disruptive defensive force today and was terrific on the boards. Maybe you couldn't see it on TV, but he was the only Wolves player making it remotely difficult for the Mavs to have their way offensively. Lots of good things from him that didn't show up in the box score. But even the box score paints a positive picture of Okogie's play - 6 rebounds, 1 steal and 2 blocks in only 23 minutes. And I think Okogie ended up our most efficient scorer as well, hitting half of his 8 field goal attempts and 1 of his 2 shots from behind the arc.

The Wolves lost by 20 points, giving up 111 to the Mavs. It's not hard to see why the Wolves lost. It's attributable to the following:

1. Russell hit only 6 of his 18 field goal attempts (33.3%) and only 2 of his 9 attempts from behind the arc (22.2%)

2. Beasley hit only 5 of his 15 field goal attempts (33.3%).

3. Naz Reid hit only 4 of his 13 field goal attempts (30.8%) and missed both of his 3-point attempts

4. Layman hit only 2 of his 7 field goal attempts (28.6%)

5. The Wolves collectively hit only 6 of their 15 free throw attempts (40%)

6. The Wolves showcased their notoriously weak defense up with middle as Porzingis scored 38 points on over 50% shooting while their PG Curry (not Steph) scored 27 points on 64.7% shooting.

A lot of those misses by Russell, Beasley, Reid and especially Layman were on wide open shots, including bunnies in the paint.

I think the numbers say it all and they don't point to Okogie. I can honestly say Okogie looked even better in person than his numbers would otherwise suggest.

You're being a little kind in saying neither are good defenders, at least in DLO's case. He is one of the worst defenders in the league. Although playing next to KAT he might not look as bad.

Q. OK, this is where you and I will agree. Like you, I'm not sure about this backcourt. I like both players individually, especially Beasley. But I'm not sure it's the right combination for the reasons you stated. Neither is particularly good defensively and neither one is good at breaking down the defensive with dribble penetration. I wish we could could implant J-Mac's quickness and tenacity into Russell. Then we'd have the backcourt we need. But science has developed yet to fulfill my wish. :)

Cool - I'm not sure yet about Beasley defensively. DLO is bad on that end of the court, but I see Beasley as mediocre defensively with the chance to be pretty good. He has good instincts, is strong and seems mentally tough. Those are all good ingredients for a decent defender.

Lip, I agree with you on Beasley. I think he has potential there. The matador on the other hand............not so much
