Can't believe I'm saying great deal on 16 million for our 5th best player, but it certainly is seeing what the french poodle got. Well done boys. Always liked G, he's put on weight, he'll be more physical if he has to be, but his offense and versatility is great.

Sounds like you want a starting SG based off this description

Not sure....Gobert is almost single handedly responsible for turning the Jazz into a top 10 defensive team. You can't say the same about Gorgui's impact on either side of the court. I'm not suggesting we didn't get a good deal with Gorgui; I'm more defending the deal Gobert got. Plus he's a bit younger.

Here are some comparables from this past offseason:
Mozgov - 4@64M
Mahimi - 4@64M
Noah - 4@72M
Biyombo - 4@72M
R. Anderson - 4@80M
Whiteside - 4@92M
Horford - 4@113M
It feels about right. If Dieng had better defensive chops, he'd be worth ~ 4@100M given his ability on offense to make shots, pass, and hit free throws. But the defensive issues bring his value down. I think it's a fair deal for both sides.

No question Gobert is the more valuable player, Q...but 50% more valuable? I can't see it. I'm not as down on Gorgui's defense as you are (he actually looks pretty good in the basketball reference stats I attached), and Gobert is a poor offensive player...his 57% free throw percentage makes him a huge target for a Hack-a-Frog strategy. I'm not spending $24 million on Rudy Gobert...I'd rather spend my $24 million on Gorgui Dieng plus Dirk Nowitzki.

Great context Q! And I agree, looking at those contracts G's deal is fair for both G and the team.

Our starters are fine. Also I didn't say the guy had to do both. If he can do either above average that would be huge for us. Bazz does neither.

And those numbers were from last offseason and the guys signing extensions now know the money is going up next offseason. It's not quite expecting the big contract next offseason cause you just never know look at Ezeli he had some injury concerns and didn't get the big payday many assumed but getting Dieng signed for something comparable to last year's money seems like a great move now.
Dieng compared to Gobert or a guy like Biyombo is interesting because those guys are all about defense rebounding etc. Gobert is a really good player because of his impact as a defensive player. On the other hand while Dieng doesn't have that large impact he is a pretty well rounded player and that has value. His contract suggests he isn't a top level starter but likely a good one. That seems like a fair deal.
One thing I thought about fairly quickly after digesting this deal is Dieng is the first of this new era to get paid. Rubio got his deal before the new era started and...who knows if he will be a part of this team down the road but anyway back to guys getting paid. We assume Towns and Wiggins are going to be max players and Lavine could be or at least a near max guy. Dieng just got paid but I think we can say Dieng could have tried to to get more money but he MIGHT have taken less money. Could he be the first guy to do so and start something that resembles the fantasy some of us have of those group becoming the next Spurs? Idk maybe...probably not but it's a bit interesting to think about.

Great deal for the Wolves in my opinion.
The best thing about Dieng is his durability (touch wood). He played all 82 games last season and 73 the season before.

Yeah, I consider him a glue guy for us. He certainly isn't perfect, but he's durable, offensively much improved, and unselfish. Defensively he'll always struggle to hold his ground in the paint, but that's why he cost us "only" 64M vs. 100M+.
