Yep, guys picked at #24 aren't expected to be stars. Here's a list of players the Wolves have picked after #20 in the first round.
Andre Roberson
Lazar Hayward
Wayne Ellington
Ndudi Ebi
Paul Grant (I watched this clumsy oaf's workout...still cant believe we drafted him!)
Gerald Glass
Only Ellington has carved out a respectable NBA career, although nothing special. Roberson started for OkC last year, but only averaged 3 PPG.
Some may say that this is an indictment of the Wolves' drafting, and that argument can certainly be made. But I also think you could find similar results with other team, and my point is still valid...not much is expected of late first rounders.
My expectations for Jones are much higher. He just seems like a winner to me.
After looking at what the #24 pick produced in the past chances are pretty decent we have a worthwhile player. :)

So here is my problem with what Flip did: We gave up
three 2nd rounders for him, including #31 and #36 in this year's draft. So what are the odds that one or more of those three 2nd rounders eventually pans out into a good rotation player versus putting all of our eggs in pick #24?

Wow...how interesting that 4 of the 5 best #24s of all time played for the Wolves...Cassell, Porter, AK47 and Sprewell. It could be fate that Tyus becomes an all-star!

I agree with you Q but I think it's clear Flip really valued Tyus. I think we overpaid that future 2nd rounder especially since the Cavs supposedly really wanted 31 to get Osman. I think sometimes it's tricky to get either using your assets now and defering them right. I am gonna trust Flip on Tyus.

I like Jones. I really want him to do well... because it would let me hold on to that ever-so-tiny part of my mind that makes me think I can relate to these NBA players just because I play a lot of basketball.
Tyus Jones isn't super fast. (relative). Not super athletic. (relative) But the guy knows how to play. His composure as a college freshman PG at one of the marquee schools in college hoops history... from the beginning (Wisconsin road game) to the championship game was amazing. I think it was more rare than even he got credit for. Again, this wasn't some super freak athlete out there. It was a 18/19 year kid playing with incredible poise.
My brain tells me that the kid is just too small and not athletic enough to be a difference maker in the pros against the best players in the world. But the kid hasn't let anybody down yet.
[Note: I remember discussing Jones after that first Wisconsin game. I didn't think he was going pro at that point... not even close. He seemed like a kid destined to be in the college game for 2 or 3 years... if he had... I think he would have become a bit of a legendary PG. In the pros... I think he can be a serviceable backup. And that would have been more than enough when guys like Brevin Knight or Jonny Flynn were starters. Right now, the league is littered with good to great PGs.]

It's too tough to say what the 3rd 2nd rounder will be. Most years, after #40 they are just throw away picks. But you have to look at #31 and #36 as having some potential. This was by all accounts a pretty good draft year. Pick #24 was probably worth more this year than most years. But the same goes for #31 and #36. Maybe this debate can be brought up later when we see how Tyus does vs the players going #31-#36.

I will judge the trade by how Willy and Joseph Young does compared to Jones.
Willy was a teammate of Prozing and he got traded to the Knicks. I think that will be a good fit for both.
Young went to Pacers and they need a backup PG and are not thrilled with Hill. I think Young could be a surprise for them.

I'm right there with you on this one. We all know sometimes there are guys who were blessed with less and do more with it. Just like there are guys (like Wes Johnson for instance) who are blessed with it all and still fail. You can't measure it. You can't always describe it. But some guys just have "it". I'm excited to give this kid a chance. It seems like an ideal situation behind Rubio and most likely with some young/athletic guys around him.

Young has an impressive summer league. Tyus has been so so.
Joseph Young Recap from NBA.com
The No. 43 pick was the early scoring star of summer, getting just nine points in his Indiana debut in Orlando before moving to the forefront with 25, 28 and 28 the next three games. Young was a combined 29 of 55 from the field (52.7 percent) the last three, including nine of 17 (52.9) behind the arc. It's the offensive punch a lot of teams envisioned while concerned about the transition to point guard, concerns that didn't go away with 13 assists against 11 turnovers in all.
