The three major sports teams in Minny, whose made the most moves risky or otherwise? The Vikings. Of the three whose had the most success? The Vikings. God bless them for trying and breaking my heart.
Wild have paid for big free agents and it for the most part failed. Twins spend money on middle tier players and that has failed. We weren't getting horford or Durant so why overspend for middle tier free agents
The Twins would have you believe those were mid tier players. Maybe for them but not for anyone else. The Wolves overspent for Pek, but won't over spend for guys with a legitimate track record?
I will ask again who would you have signed for the price they were given
Think I meantioned Pau, and yes he wants to chase but I would've offered him 15 mil more over the next 2 years than the Spurs and seen how bad he wanted those rings.
Based on the quotes from Thibs and Layden I don't think they want guys that came here because we offered the most money.
Was Rush and Cole getting bigger offers elsewhere?
You tell me.
Well if I had to guess they went to where the most money was offered .
So you don't really know? Thanks.
I guess I should expand on my point I think Layden and Thibs are looking for guys that want to be here, be team guys and fit the profile they are looking for etc. They aren't just going to throw crazy money at a guy just to get him to come here at least not this offseason.
Everyone wants a bigger guy but the reality is we don't know for sure which guy we should get. The team isn't mature yet I just don't see the reason to wildly overpay to get a guy and 6 months from now find out we should have just played a guy we already had on the roster. That's a legit possibility. Every FA that didn't come here the Wolves were interested either went to a situation that was better for them or they got paid more or got more years or some combination thereof. Fine no shocker there from me. It turns out the guy we heard reports on that sounded like could be gotten for a reasonable amount (Deng) and a guy pretty much everyone here would have liked got a ton of money for 4 YEARS!!!
News flash sometimes these small signings turn out to be worthwhile. Where were the huge headlines for when GS signed Speights or Barbosa? What about when the Cavs signed Richard Jefferson? Sure I am cherry picking here but you are also just needling people cause you are bored with the Rubio thing so... :)

Well said monster.
I'm diggin the low key, patient moves right now. Thibs and Layden may want to see what they have for themselves this season before switching too much up. assuming we just sign another 1 year deal for our last roster spot we are looking at between
http://www.spotrac.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/cap/2017/39 and 47 millionin cap space with Rush, Garnett, Dieng, Shabazz the only ones to let go/resign.
http://www.spotrac.com/nba/free-agents/2017/next offseasonwill be a nice time to have money and our front office will have a better idea on the rosters needs.
Edit : forgot to add Dunns contract. So 35-43 mil.

Good points. I'd also add Pek will be on his last year of his deal so he might be a guy (contract) that could be moved as part of a deal of some kind possibly to open up even more cap space.

Pau wants to win now. We could have offered 20 million per year (reports are that the Blazers did offer that) and he still probably would have taken the Spurs offer. Better team. He is old. He made his money. He wants to win. Spurs offer that. We don't. Should we have out bid the Lakers for Deng?

Getting Aldrich and Rush gives us a little depth and fits our needs, although I expect Aldrich will be more important, a regular part of the rotation and Rush may be in and out like in GS. Both guys bring some experience, neither guy brings drama or bad attitudes from what I can tell, Aldrich brings a little defense, and hopefully Rush will continue rediscovering the 3 point shooting from earlier in his career (remember, he had two horrible years in this regard recently). Rush will be nice injury insurance.
I'm expecting more from Aldrich than Rush, particularly in his impact on our defense, but in a basketball sense, these guys really aren't all that important to me. Of the things I give a fuck about on the court (Thibs' impact on our defense, Towns' continued development, Wiggins' handles, rebounding, and passing, do we get pre- or post-All Star LaVine, the Dunn-Rubio conundrum, can Bjelica be a factor, Tyus, etc.), Aldrich probably gets about 4% of my fucks and Rush 2%.
What is important off the court is that the short length and relatively small size of these contracts mean Thibs did not make a big mistake, leaving us cap room flexibility for the future. We didn't get a home run this year (Horford--who would have been perfect here), which is a reminder that for all our potential, we're still the 5th worst team in the league with the worst track record the last 10 years until we prove otherwise. But we also didn't screw up real bad. So it could have been a better offseason, but it more easily could have been worse.
The real questions regarding free agency are for next year, Bazz and Dieng. My suspicion is we need to trade Bazz and extend Dieng. I like Bazz, but a more true 3 and D guy would fit better in Bazz's roster spot. Dieng is important enough to keep, but he's going to cost an arm and a leg next offseason. Can we extend him this offseason? If we could do that (it will be pricey, but as long as its reasonable in this new market), that would be way more important than getting Aldrich and Rush.

I'm with the guys that reside on the side of cautious signings. Look, I more than maybe anyone on here wanted to see a big name sign. I have been watching this team since their first season, and frankly, am sick to death of the losing. BUUUUTTTT, the deals being handed out are cap-killer, loser deals almost every one. I don't care that the cap is going up....paying guys like Biyambo $18M and Barnes $23.5M per season will NEVER pay out and make sense. A fringe starter. No thanks. We need to be patient.
Here is what I see happening. Many/most of the guys being signed to these deals will become available in trades in the next year. Why? Because they are overpaid and won't perform to expectations. Simple as that. A guy like Pek then has some value as an expiring deal. We get to see what we have in our youth, and then perhaps next year can parlay a couple assets into one of these players that, while overpaid, would be a great fit to our roster.
While I hate it...being patient is the right thing to do at the moment.

I love what we are doing this off-season. It shows we are thinking long-term and every worry about Thibs sacrificing the future for the present can be dis-guarded.
I hope we hear soon that KG and Pek are retiring. Any idea how Pek retiring for medical reasons would affect our cap?

I wouldn't hold my breath on either guy retiring especially Pek. I can't remember where I heard it but it was said that Pek is still going to give it a go this year and try and play. It's gonna be a little different this year he isn't gonna just get handed minutes like he would have before. I think eventually he realizes he can't play and they agree on some way for both sides to move on. I don't think that happens till Febuary at the earliest. I'm no insider but that's my moderately educated guess.

Having KG and Pek on the books really screws this team form the point of building a roster.
