What did Layden do other than the paperwork? Has he really been a detriment to this franchise? Always thought of him as a secretary or a clerk for Thibs. Certainly shouldn't be considered as a bad [or good] hire/signing.

Cam - I think your take on Layden's role is on the mark. It seems obvious and I've heard from sources inside the organization that it's entirely true. But I'd still say it was a terrible hire for this reason. Giving Thibodeau both the head coach and PBO roles, in my view, required a strong GM to provide some check on or counterbalance to Thibodeau's otherwise unconstrained control of the franchise. Thibodeau, he control freak that he is, clearly wanted Layden. That's understandable when you see what kind of lapdog he is. Moreover, Layden's tenure as the head of the Knicks' front office was an absolute disaster, confirming that Layden isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer to stay the least. It was incumbent upon Glen to say no to Thibodeau and hire a strong and smart GM if for no other reason than to provide Glen with good, independent advice. So I think it's very fair to include Layden among the top 10 worst hires in Wolves history.
