Get him moving and that's when he can be efficient. Cuts to the rim. Handoffs. Flare screens. Anything other than here's the ball 26 ft from the basket now make something happen. That's not his game. If he gets the ball with a built in advantage of space I think you would see him be more aggressive getting to the hoop. Right now it's just here's the ball. Get to the rim. And that is a hard way to play basketball especially when you don't have a tight handle.
Maybe. But let's not forget that he's had 3 coaches now... and whether that's Thibs fault for the plateau or not... he's effectively the same player he was as a rookie.
One thing I did like from Flip when Wiggins was a rookie...
One game he ended it with Wiggins trying to guard Zach Randolph or somebody like that... only to have him start out the next game defending Chris Paul. He was basically saying... "you're our guy, we think you can be a lockdown defender from 1-4"...
Granted, I think Randolph hit a couple of easy shots to win the game... and Paul destroyed Wiggins to start the next game... so maybe it was fool's thinking in the end.
I'm sure somebody, or multiple people, tried something similar with Jeff Green to similar results back in the day.
None of those coaches had a modern offense. They all were old school. We simply haven't had a coach with a modern offensive system coach this team. This year of Thibs is the closest we've been to that and he still lets it get bogged down to iso ball as the game wears on.
He's not a ball handler and every coach we've had has tried to make him into one rather than really play him to his strengths. I think that's really the bigger indictment with him. He's a square peg that has repeatedly been forced into a round hole just because he was an elite prospect and number 1 pick and that's how those guys are developed. Well at some point his limitations need to matter with how you play with him and we have yet to have a coach who's willing to admit that defeat and create space off the ball for him to operate. He should be running off of screens all game long and nobody has done that because it's just PnR on one side of the floor then move the ball to the other side for another PnR.
