As it stands, there would only be 5 players left even coming back (Towns, Wiggins, Dieng, Bjelica and Jones) should Aldrich be moved.
This doesn't bode well when it comes to having to get a few minimum salary guys in here.
In Thibs' defense, it makes a lot of sense. He hadn't coached, watched practice, training, etc. of the incumbent players last offseason. His moves last year We're a good approach. I don't care about him moving on from Hill, Rush, or Aldrich at all. I wouldn't completely agree with trading Aldrich now, as the deadline makes more sense to me, but it wouldn't exactly bother me compared to the taj signing, Rubio/Teague deal, or the butler trade.
Hell, even this year is rather intelligent. No Mozgov, deng, Turner, Crabbe, Leonard, etc. deals that screw us for 4 years.
I see no reason why Aldrich needs a 1st attached for a dump though. His contract is plenty reasonable, and a dump should only need a 2nd. Otherwise trade near the deadline with the first for an actual player.
I didn't need him to sign a Mozgov or Deng-like deal, but he couldn't find one guy worth keeping around for an extra year. Whether Thibs likes it or not, he's got 10 players on this roster. The last 5 guys might wind up on minimum deals. I think it would really benefit him to sign someone that stands a chance of being around longer than 1 year. That's the issue. Instead of paying Jordan Hill $85K per minute, find a young hungry player who impresses you enough to bring back. That's been such an Achilles heel for this franchise. For a team that couldn't draw flies with crap, player development and scouting should be a hallmark of this organization and it simply hasn't. Of the last 5 guys, even if they're with Patton in Iowa, unearth some talent worth keeping. Otherwise, having a G-league team is pointless.

I was reading about the cap because I was thinking about the Wolves bringing back Rush and/or Casspi for a 1 year and next year they would have early bird rights. I'm not sure how much that would really matter though but it could be worthwhile to utilize with another player in the future.
Also something that wasn't on my calculations for salary is that the Wolves only have 10 players and there is some sort of cap hold for each theoretical player to get to the minimum of 12 players. I'm not sure how much that but it probably knocks down the numbers at least a million maybe even 2 million.

First thought: can we stretch Aldrich and keep the pick?
Second thought: Bogdanovic!

Yeah that could make some sense...maybe.
So I was under the impression that the Gibson signing basically took out all the cap space for the Wolves but that's not the case. I used the numbers Sporttrac estimated for Teague and Gibson's salaries which are I assume the lowest numbers for this year possible. So the Wolves around 4 million left before they are over the cap. If they moved Aldrich I assume they could get to over 11 million in space to sign another player. Or as Phenom suggested they could split that up between a couple players and still have the room exception.
player salary
Butler 19,300,894
Taj Gibson 13,658,537
Dieng 14,112,360
Wiggins 7,574,323
Aldrich 7,300,000
Towns $6,216,840
Belly $3,949,999
Tyus $1,471,382
Patton $2,247,480
Martin (stretch) $1,360,305
Jeff Teague $17,592,593
Total Salaries 94,784,713
I was just looking at that too. According to those numbers we would have 4.308m left, and the room exception is 4.328m. Why couldn't we find a guy to sign for the exact amount of space we have left and then get a full MLE? Or do you have to be AT the cap by the start of the new year?
Either way, wouldn't be able to use the 4.3 in free space and then the room exception?
Or maybe we could luck out and flip Aldrich to a team who is looking to drop a little cap, taking back 11ish mill and giving them his 7?

I believe we can use the 4.3, then use the 4.3 room exception (I'm rather positive that is the only exception we will be able to utilize this year). After that, vet minimums are endless, allow you to go over the cap, and are around 2 mil per?
These are my favorite (maybe only?) remaining wing/guard targets. We should be able to get three of these guys regardless of what happens with Aldrich. Likely picking from Tier 2 only if he isn't moved, though I'd love to use those two 4.3 slots on two guys from tier 1. The options are not terrible.
Tier 1
LRMaM (3/4)
Vince Carter
Jonathan Simmons
CJ Miles
Thabo Sefolosha
Tier 2
Brandon Rush
Tony Allen
Nick Young
Tyreke Evans (can play 1-3)
Mike Dunleavy
Anthony Morrow
Jason Terry (1/2)
Randy Foye (1/2)
Gerald Green
Ian Clark (1/2)
3rd PGs (vet min.):
Ramon Sessions
Ronnie Price
Aaron Brooks
Shelvin Mack
Tyler Ennis
Raymond Felton
Isaiah Canaan
Brandon Jennings
Brian Roberts

It sounds like the Clippers may be a spot since for a possible trade of Aldrich, OKC first.
Can we get Lou Williams from them? Or possible Beverly? Lou would be my target.
