Mo, Brewer, Budinger, Hummel, Young, Bennett, Turiaf

compared to

Jones, Miller, Prince, Payne, KG, Bjelica, Towns.

Interesting way to look at things.

I like this list Tim but you could also add Brown/Rudez.

I might give the 2014 guys the edge in overall impact but it's close. The real question for this team is something more important. Potential at the time the season starts.

2014 potential includes Thad becoming the PF for this team long term. Bennett. Hummel potential to be a nice bench role player

2015 Towns Tyus Payne and Bjelica and if he sticks Brown. The upside is higher in this year's newcomers because of Towns and the youth of Tyus. Payne and Brown I would imagine we are hoping they can be as useful as Hummel showed. Bjelica has a weird upside because of his situation maybe sorta similar to Thad only much less of a sure thing but a favorable contract.

Towns and Jones just aren't going to be huge impact guys in year 1. I don't think it's really that close when it comes to comparing guys who have been in the league a couple years versus rookies. Anthony Davis averaged 13/8/1/1.8 in his rookie year and he was a much better player coming out of college than Towns. Towns and Tyus are both very raw rookies that won't hit this potential everyone is talking about for 2-3 years. The potential of Towns having a special year instead of just a normal up and down rookie year is so small that it really shouldn't be a serious option.

As much as a lot of us dislike Thad, he's still gonna be a more impactful player than Towns this year because he's a more consistent player. Starting as soon as next year that might already be different, but right now the upside of rookies just isn't as high for their rookie seasons as people are making out on this board. I think just like with Wiggins people are arguing too much for what Towns is likely to be in 3-5 years than what he is today when they argue what he can give us on the court today is close to what guys like Mo, Brewer and Thad could give us. I don't see how it's going to be close this year, but I could see as early as next year the gap significantly closing.

Mo, Brewer, Bud and Thad are all really good role players in the right situations. We didn't have room for any of them outside of Mo on this year's team to keep working towards our long-term goal, but I would expect to see good seasons from all of them on their new teams because they are quality bench players/lower end starters and we're gonna be giving a lot of playing time to first, second and third year players to lockdown our future starting 5 and first couple guys off the bench. In 2-3 years I could easily see us needing a guy like Brewer, Bud or Thad as a piece needed to push us either into the playoff race or a little bit further. But right now we need to find out which young guys can play and fill in around them and we don't have the time to do that and keep vets happy with playing time. That's why we'll be experiencing growing pains while they'll be producing at a more consistent level, but long-term we will be better off for it even though it's likely our guys won't out produce them for a couple years.

I agree with Khans. I think expectations for new guys are pretty low - especially Towns and Tyus due to their age. It's only a tiny sample, but we saw in Summer League that Towns didn't dominate. In fact, here are the side by side comparisons of Towns and Hamilton averages for their rookie Summer League:

Towns: 31.2 Minutes, 12.8 Pts, 7.2 Rebounds

Hamilton: 28.4 Minutes, 18.0 Pts, 7.0 Rebounds

Note: Before anyone gets butt hurt and claims I'm saying I'd rather have Hamilton than Towns - that's not what I'm saying. Rather, I'm saying It's normal for a 19 year old kid to struggle a bit their first year when they play against older and more experienced players. And I fully expect Towns to struggle early just like Wiggins and LaVine did last year.

CD - Good points. I temper my thoughts on what Towns will bring simple because it seemed Payne played better then Towns in summer league. I don't think I need to express my thoughts on Paynes value as a player, but I feel Towns will need some seasoning.

To clarify when I said potential I mean beyond the season whether it was 2014 or 2015. I agree that the rookies having significant impact this year is a lot to ask.
