This is what I'm talking about. The thought that we can line everything up perfectly for a 10 year run with a whole team of guys. It doesn't work like that. Contracts end in 4 years for anyone not already a T Wolf. Wiggins and Zach will be 25 and Towns 24 when any supposed huge albatrosses would be up. That's when they are going to be peaking anyway. We need guys who can hold them up now while they are young and developing, not bringing in role players around them and keep expecting them to carry us to victory for the next decade. The Warriors brought in Lee, Iggy and Bogut before Steph and Klay and Draymond became the great players who could carry the team. We need our David Lee this summer to help us start making the playoffs as soon as next year hopefully and then in 3-4 years they will be ready to carry the team there themselves and that deal for that guy who helped them out now will be up and then we can bring in the role players around them. We need our Iggy, Bogut and Lee for the next 3-4 years until Towns, Wiggins and Lavine are ready to carry the ship themselves. Otherwise we're going to keep sucking for 2-3 more years if we're expecting them to carry the team to victory this young in their careers.
I was going to type something similar, but you beat me to it. I think you stated it very well above. It's pretty tough to build only through the draft. I understand wanting to hold off on making big moves via trade or free agency until you have some sort of a core. But what does Wiggins have left - like two more years on his deal? I believe Dieng and Bazz will be in their last year's next season. If you keep waiting, then you can get stuck in permanent rebuild mode.
We have some pieces in Towns, Wiggins, Rubio, LaVine and as everyone knows - I like Dieng. Add a couple good veteran players around those guys along with another top 5 pick. Then find a good coach to get the most out of them. I certainly think if they did those things, we'd be playoff bound next season.

I am in this group as well. Wolves should get another player or two that can help shoulder the load while the young guys continue to grow. Then when those players move on, the young guys will be in full alpha mode and the team can sign guys for that phase. The Spurs built on that sort of developmental arc throughout Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili's tenure there. There's no reason to think Wig, Towns and Zach need to do it all from now till the end.

I agree with the big signing sentiment. We need a late peak vet or two to come in and push us over the top. The mention of Iggy Bogut and Lee is right on. Iggy was huge for them in the finals and Bogut being healthy is also a key component of the Warriors sucess in the last two years. If we're serious about winning we do the same.

Here are 3 guys that I would want to be here....wishful, but a possibility.
1. Nic Batum----He's a glue guy that can play multiple spots.
2. P. Gasol. Why not?! He's familiar with Ricky and he fits the 4 and vet. bill that we need. Not to mention then cap space.
3. Z. Pachulia. Yet another big that does the little things that matters.
They are all older but very servicable.

Gasol is definitely a 5 in today's game, but I'm not sure signing him to the reported $20M per year deal he wants is a good idea. Actually, it's a bad idea. The guy just can't guard in space anymore, at all. He's still pretty decent as a rim protector, but i just don't see it as a huge upgrade defensively, which is where we need to get better. Plus, he wants to stay in Chicago.

I love Noah about as much as anyone but it's hard to see him as anything more than a part-time player because he can't seem to stay healthy and he isn't getting younger. So basically if the price is right sure but that price wouldn't be very high.

I agree if the price is right. I'm assuming the Bulls want to develop Portis and Mirotic and keep Gibson and Pau. That means Chicago won't offer much to keep Noah and given his age and injuries, he'll be a lower tier free agent. But he still has some good years left and he may be happy to accept being more of a role player on our roster, plus if we have Thibs, he may sign here for a bargain amount to be part of building something special.

Probably not

I like Bazemore too, but in the new FA age, he'll get substantially more than $9M a season.
Maybe. He might be able to command something like DeMarre Carroll's four-year, $60M deal he got last year if there's a team willing to pay that much. He's just not as big as Carroll nor is he as good of a 3P shooter. Think he's more so in this tier below and if I was negotiating, I'd use these other FA deals against him:
- Danny Green: 4 years, $45 million with Spurs
- Jae Crowder: 5 years, $35 million with Celtics
- Iman Shumpert (35): 4 years, $40 million with Cavaliers
- Arron Afflalo (39): 2 years, $16 million with Knicks
- Corey Brewer (45): 3 years, $24 million with Rockets
- Marco Belinelli (59): 3 years, $19 million with Kings
Nothing we've ever seen is going to compare to the impending free agent spending frenzy about to hit the NBA this summer.
Every team is going to have to "overpay." Significantly. The thing is that many (most?) teams will have the money to do so. It's going to make rookie deals and the contracts guys like Crowder, I. Thomas or even Middleton and Rubio signed seem like great values.
