Rudy to the Celtics for Horford, D. White and a future lottery-protected 1st. The Celtics might go for this if they fail to win it all this season and even more so if they don’t come out of the East. The Celtics have plenty of scoring in Tatum, Brown, Smart and Brogdon. I think Rudy fits well with the Celtics.
Yeah, White would be a very good get and it would add back one of our lost 1sts.

It does seem like the Celtics are going to need to get another pure Center at some point, although of all the positions to have a gap in, it's probably the easiest and cheapest to fill. You don't have to go all-in on a Rudy like we did last offseason.
MIN receives: Malcolm Brogdon, Robert Williams and 2025 1st RP

BOS receives: Rudy Gobert

Works salary wise and helps us free up 6 mil of cap space.
But why would Boston do this?

That's not even an knock on Gobert.

I’ll take a shot at answering your question, which is a good one. I’ve been predicting that the Celtics won’t even make the NBA finals this season. The Sixers win last night without Embiid has confirmed my thinking. If I turn out to be right, the Celtics front office will likely feel compelled to make a significant off-season move. What do the Celtics arguably lack? They certainly don’t lack talented guards or wings. Those positions are the team’s strength with Tatum, Brown, Smart, White and Brogdon. Meanwhile, their starting center, Robert Williams, can’t stay healthy. He played only 35 games this season and and missed a ton of games before this season. Horford is still good, but he’ll turn 37 next season. Center is the one position that could be fairly characterized as an area of need for the Celtics. I could see the Celtics front office being enticed by the prospect of combining Tatum, Brown, Smart and White with 7’1 all-defensive center with a history of staying healthy. And they could get Rudy for a fraction of what the Wolves gave up, which would provide nice PR cover for the Celtics’ front office.

It think it’s a fair deal. The Wolves would get a good starting quality PG with three-point ability and a future 1st. The Celtics would be getting an excellent defensive center who, unlike Williams, will likely be on the court the vast majority of games and they’d be jettisoning a guy who can’t stay on the court. Meanwhile, they’d still have White as a terrific starter quality PG as a backup. I actually think the Celtics would be dumb to turn that one down.

My variation of the deal would be Gobert in exchange for White, Horford and a future 1st or a couple 2nd round picks.

Horfords age scares me. He is 36 and signed for 3 more years. He could become unplayable, but then again so could Rudy if his back is an issue that becomes more serious. It's just that I always looked at Horford recently like a big risk to decline rapidly due to age. Not many big guys (or NBA players in general) have played well in their late 30's.

If you think the Wolves will be on a trajectory with Ant who may be entering his prime when Horford is 38/39 do you really want 27 million sitting on the bench?

Then you have to question who is more impactful White or Rudy. As far as wins and losses now and into the near term I think Rudy (barring his health concerns).
All good points, Wolvesfan. Several responses. First, I’d rather have $27 million than $50 million sitting on the bench and Horford’s salary would actually be easier to move in a trade next year or thereafter. Second, Horford looks like he has another season or two of productive basketball in him and I think he fits the Wolves better than Rudy because of his perimeter shooting, which opens up the lane for both KAT and Edwards. Third and most importantly, the issues you rightly identify are why I think Boston might be inclined to take the deal and include a future 1st or maybe even a future 1st and a couple 2nds.

Rudy for Lonzo, Patrick Williams, Dalen Terry and a pick. (Rumors of a Williams, Vucevic and 2 1st last season what the bulls wanted for Rudy)

Rudy for Capela, Hunter and a 1st

Rudy for Hayward, Rozier and a 1st (pretty much a cap cutting move for the wolves)

Rudy for Ben Simmons and a 1st

Rudy and Prince for Gafford, Morris, Wright, Kispet, Davis and the wizards 1st this year top 5 protected

I think the wolves can get 1 pick and solid rotation pieces back for Rudy in general.

Is Dallas a potential suitor for Rudy? Their defense really suffered with what they had to give up for Kyrie Irving. I mean, Irving and Doncic are prolific shot makers and passers, but neither can defend all that well. Rudy is damn near a walking top 10 defense. Seems like he'd shore up a lot for them on that end. And Irving and Doncic actually have the skill level to get Rudy the ball in ways he can catch and finish, unlike Ant.

I guess what I haven't looked at is what we could get in return. Does Dallas even have anything they could offer us?

Like I said in the other forum, it'll be something like Bertans/Hardaway/Bullock/2's, Basically breaking up his giant long salary into three crappy but smaller more movable deals that add shooting.

Yeah, not a lot for them to offer up although it would certainly shore up our depth on the wings.

Lol. Weird. I don’t know what happened. I was trying so post a response and all I did was keep repeating your post. I thought all your trade scenarios were realistic. My favorite would be the deal with the Bulls. It would be a great deal for the Wolves if Lonzo’s knee came around. I don’t think I’d do the deal for Simmons. He seems uninterested in playing basketball.
