We should have went with Tori Hunter.
I don't disagree. I don't think strategy is as important in a baseball manager as it is in football or basketball. More important I think is having a guy the players like and respect. Is Buxton going to be inspired to play for a guy who never got out of the low majors and has a .411 winning percentage as a manager?

The guy has one thing going for him...

... extensive experience being patient with young players and toeing the company line for very cheap ownership.

The hire has NOTHING to do with wins and losses on the field.
I wonder how many marquee candidates they approached who weren't interested in working for owners who just gutted the team and don't appear to be interested in winning. Or who they didn't approach because they knew they wouldn't be interested. The fact of the matter is no very good candidate would want to work for the Pohlads. Getting a guy who has failed as a manager but has shown that he will work for owners who only look at the team as a business is probably the best we could have done.

We need to figure out the TSJ piece of this offense. He's shooting 26.7% from two on the year. A lot of us including me, thought while losing NAW would hurt our defense, TSJ getting to the hoop was going to be a big plus.

Just comparing Shelton's record this season to the manager who succeeded him...managing the same players:

Shelton: 12-26 .316
Kelly: 59-65 .476

Pretty damning. But again, he's probably the best a bargain basement ownership group could get.

Maybe this should be moved to the Twins board.

Minnesota is a national joke, and the next mayor of Minneapolis will seal the deal.

Cool, while I agree with you about Fateh (although I don't think he is going to win), I think Abe teed up this thread to show it's just not the Wolves who are not doing well right now. Misery loves company, but you can make a case that actually the Wolves might be doing better than the other three major pro teams and U of M football, which might be a little like being the tallest midget in the room. So I would argue comments about the futility about the Twins and the other local teams do belong in this thread. Frankly this thread made me feel a little better about our Wolves...I'm pretty sure if they move on from Finchy, there will be a slew of good candidates lining up to replace him. Unlike our Twins who are stuck with Shelton.

I'm glad to hear Fateh may not win, I thought it was trending that way. And yes, the Wolves are the only hope on the Minnesota sports landscape right now. The Vikings can't draft so they plug holes with expensive, aging free agents who get hurt all the time. And they still don't have the quarterback position solved. The Twins with their ownership will become the AL version of the Pirates. And the Wild are stuck in perpetual mediocrity, too good to draft high and not good enough to win in the playoffs. Kaprizov is great but taking $17 million/year doesn't exactly shout I want to win. The Wolves will come out of this funk but remember what I've been saying about running it back.

I think the Gophers football despite last weeks beat down have been far exceeding expectations. You got a new young QB and bunch of new offensive lineman, so my feeling was they would probably suck and they've been decent overall.

I can't say the Wolves are exceeding expectations for sure. But it's early and Ant is hurt, so give it some time. Let's see after 20-30 games where we stand.
