ESPN is reporting that the Wolves are looking to trade Green for enough salary space to sign Kuminga without exceeding the 2nd apron and if they can’t find a trade they will waive and stretch him. To find a realistic salary-shedding trade, the Wolves will need to find a team that would like to swap a longer-term contract at a lower per year salary for Green’s expiring contract. That’s the only reason I can see a team agreeing to take Green for a lower-salary player without getting an additional sweetener from us as well. Since we don’t have any picks to trade, we can’t offer any realistic sweetener. I’m afraid we’ll end up waiving and stretching Josh. In either case, Kuminga is our starting PF for the next two or three seasons.

Maybe Tim can get another favor out of his brother in Chicago, since we let them grab Claxton for nothing.

I think we were all clear that we could only pay him more than the vet minimum if we cleared some salary space to stay under the second apron. Before the Wolves actually sign Kuminga, they’ll have to clear about $3.5M by trading Green for a player with a lower salary next season or by waiving and stretching Josh.

nope it doesn’t have to be before. We have a long time to get back under. I’m no expert, but it was actually a consensus forgone conclusion on here that we only had the vet min. I knew this was always the most likely outcome with the 2nd year player option, if he actually wanted to come here. Not rocket science, guy

We’re in the 2nd apron now.

Also, when you’re in the 2nd apron, aggregating salaries is a no no, so it’ll be harder to pull off.

As you all know from prior posts, I’m skeptical about Kuminga. He’s a very talented young player who has consistently demonstrated an inability or unwillingness to defend, rebound and do the little things that help teams win. Instead, he’s focused almost entirely on scoring and has played as if he’s a high-usage offensive star. Steve Kerr became so fed up with Kuminga’s refusal to play the role he needed to play that he benched him before trading him to Atlanta. Kuminga’s pursuit of contracts well above his market value aligns with the attitude - unrealistic, inflated sense of himself - he’s displayed on th4e court. To be essentially cast aside by two teams already in his relatively brief career in spite of his obvious talent is telling and if it’s not a red flag it’s certain a very dark yellow flag.

All that said, I would think that rejection by two teams and his dismal free agency experience this off-season must have humbled him and changed his perspective. I take some comfort in the fact that he chose the Wolves over the Lakers knowing that he’ll likely have a far less prominent offensive role on the Wolves than he would on the Lakers based on each team’s roster. He essentially chose the team where he’ll have a less prominent offensive role but a better chance of winning a championship. That choice gives me hope that Kuminga has finally grown up and that he’ll be a different player who channels his considerable talent into defending, rebounding and making winning plays.

I'm a bit bummed about losing Josh but in reality he didn't play much in the Hornets best season with him there.

If they can trade him it would be better for money maneuvers down the line but the return might suck.

How is the free agent market for non PFs if they stretch Josh?
