Once again, I stated that 8 games is "not a huge sample size". My reason for wanting Mauer to DH is he seems to be the best at it of all the guys currently signed to the Minnesota Twins big league club, and as discussed by both Jester and myself, it seems like a tricky adjustment mentally to go from fielding to sitting, so why not have someone do it who has proven they can?
As far as the numorous OF prospects this team is blessed with, I think everyone can agree that we all have our favorites and we all have guys we would like to see moved as we feel their value has "peaked". I don't know that anyone can say definitively who will work out and who won't, which is why I'll abstain from pointing out the holes that may be in your plan as it pertains to Hicks. But if Kepler can play first, and has to because Sano is 3rd and Hicks/Buxton/Arcia are the OF's and the Twins decided Mauer being a top 3 DH in the AL is too good to pass up, then why not?
And one last thing: You called Mauer "one of the best". Ok. He was 8th in the AL in OPS last year, slightly better ranked than Diamond was in ERA in 2012 when healthy (14th), and he made nowhere near $23m while doing it. So maybe lighten up a little? Don't get me wrong. You're not required to. I just think a guy with 3.50 ERA in 26 starts while making $500K can be as valuable, if not more, than a guy making $23m and not quite at a .900 OPS.
