I like what I saw from Payne last season at MSU, but it just seems like there are so many options with the D league that it is almost silly to move a 1st for someone who hasn't even been able to get on the court.
The value of the pick bothers me a lot less than the hassle of not being able to trade a first for the next five seasons now. I think the NBA should do away with the protection placed on picks. You either trade a 1st or you don't.

I'm skeptical on Payne like a lot of you. But until we actually see him play here and learn a little more about the fit, this hand wringing about the deal is premature. Plus the deal is so heavily protected, I don't think the consequences are as bad as some of you think. Although the flexibility argument that Lip is championing is at least valid.

I would go along with that too.

They should just remove that stupid ass rule of not trading back to back years, or at least reduce it some. Maybe 3 in a row or something.
It's interesting how they could even trade a protected 2017 pick when they have a protected pick owed to PHO through 2016. If it lands on 2016 they will not be able to give the 2017 pick to ATL regardless.
Scenario 1:
We make the push for the playoffs next season, 2016 goes to PHO, we keep 2017 and 2018 likely goes to ATL.
Scenario 2:
We finish in a 1-12 draft slot keeping the 2016 pick and having to play the protected pick game again with ATL between 2017-2020.
I prefer scenario 1. Push for a playoff spot next season, give up 2016 to PHO, keep 2017 and give up 2018 to ATL due to being in the playoffs.
