Sorry you started this, Cam. I look at 678,000 Americans dead in less than two years from one disease and it troubles me. That's more than the 405,000 Americans who died in all of WW2, which spanned 4 years. Most of those who died in WW2 were young and most of those who have died from Covid so far have been older. But I don't think about the age of those who are dying. I think about them passing earlier, sometimes much earlier, than they would have if not for Covid. If age matters, then I would still think about the over 135,000 Americans under 65 who have died from Covid. That's a pretty big number to die from one disease in less than two years. There are many others who have survived, but who are living with serious residual cardiac and neurological symptoms from Covid. It's a serious disease that spreads person to person. You can call Covid or vaccination a political thing or the product of fear mongering, but it sure seems like public health concern to me.

For a little over a year, there was very little we could do to stop this disease from spreading and causing harm. But for the past approximately 6 months we've had vaccines that can finally put this pandemic behind us. I don't ask people if they've been vaccinated and I don't wag my finger at those who haven't gotten the vaccine. I'm not a fan of government mandates of any kind. I'm an ardent civil libertarian. I'm not into fear mongering either. I just think we need to take the fear and the anger out of this. We're facing a serious, highly communicable disease. I would hope we'd all do everything we can to stop it's spread and the potential development of even more deadly mutations - even if the main beneficiaries will be older. Vaccines are nothing new. They're a great technology that has allowed mankind to overcome terrible diseases that we were once powerless to combat. I respect those who oppose government vaccine mandates on civil libertarian grounds. But let's not dismiss this disease and the efforts to combat it as part of some political or cultural side show. This is real. It's a public health challenge. And we should be working together to meet this challenge with level heads and common decency.

This is the last post you'll read from me on this issue or any other non-basketball issue.

Also if we are so concerned about having hospital beds why on earth are we forcing people to leave that do not get vaccinated. Seems to me you would want more workers not less.

None of this is about public health anymore, if it ever was. We have many intelligent Americans in this country. Far too many have succumbed to the fear-mongering over a virus that kills less than two-percent of the people it actually infects. And of those deaths, about 79-percent (!) have been people 65-years and older. Those numbers are pulled from the CDC themselves who have been hit or miss throughout this entire process on their guidance.

Let's think logically here. In 2019, roughly 16.5-percent of the American population was 65-years old or over. Why are there even discussions of vaccine mandates when this virus primarily affects the elderly? Like I said before, 79-percent of COVID deaths have been people 65 and over, but yet they make up under 20-percent of the U.S. population. Perhaps the elderly should receive the vaccine as well as staying home and away from everybody else. Let the rest of the world operate under normal conditions. Enough is enough.

What are you afraid of?

That was an odd response to what I commented and I'm not sure why your question insinuates that I'm "afraid" of anything in particular. Would you care to rephrase your question?

If many smart people have been fear mongered into something than what are you concerned about?

I see Wiggins retiring or sitting out if they make him get it... seems like a guy with strong beliefs and principles... totally seeing him quitting in this scenario. Always liked Wiggins the person, just not crazy about Wiggins the player

Two things. Life expectancy is about 78. Is it really that unrealistic to think people over the age of 65 are likely to die?

Also if the vaccine is not stopping the transmission of the virus how do you anticipate everyone getting vaccinated would put the pandemic behind us?

Thanks for this post Lip. This is very close to my position as well.

More questions: How is it that flu deaths basically disappeared since the onset of the pandemic? Why do some states, like mine, want you to wear masks outdoors? Why was the virus created in a lab and released on the world without consequence? Why are hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants walking into our country without being tested for the virus?

All great questions... I'm really not that smart, but the answers are pretty obvious to me.

Your question answers itself. I'm most concerned that there are millions of Americans who have willingly relinquished their freedoms and discontinued the ability to think for themselves. Additionally, we have yet another divide in this country of vaccinated versus unvaccinated in regards to COVID-19. And for what? A man-made virus with real ramifications for some, but not nearly the threat it's been made out to be for the vast majority of the population. I'm blown away by people enslaving themselves. That should answer your question.
