Every stat has anomalies... including ON/OFF... or else it would be used as THE stat of all stats.

For example a guy like DeRozan is seen as a positive player by most metrics. Whether it's traditional ones like points and assists. Or PER. Or if we move into BPM and VORP. All of them point to him being a decent to pretty solid basketball player.

And his teams have had success as well... with 6 straight playoff appearances... with DeRozan playing the most minutes on the team.

But that one stat indicates that DeRozan makes the team worst when he's on the court. Every year.

Damn... the Raptors are idiots. They just kept putting him out there for 35+ mpg every year. And they still won 50+ games. Just imagine how good they'd have been if they gave more of his minutes to Patrick Patterson who was once +10.5 in Toronto. And then the idiot Spurs trade for him and make him the team's minutes leader. Idiot organization and coach.

I think like many others, it's a good stat. Only that there's enough noise there to make it dangerous to assume DeRozan or Westbrook or even A. Davis (even for one year) actually makes their teams worse when they're playing.



[Note: Jamal Crawford seems cut from the same cloth. In 2018, his On/Off were off the charts bad for the Wolves. Yet, he helped that team win games. (and lose a few, too) Just like he did for the Clippers where his On/Off stats were nearly as absurdly bad. What gives? Yet, he's winning awards and the team is winning 50+ games annually.]

I have never trusted on/off. If you're a starter on a team with 4 below-average "co-starters" and a solid six-thru-ten (2000 Magic?), then yeah, it's going to look bad.
