Realistic Trades for #7
Re: Realistic Trades for #7
I saw that Magic quote about Ingram, Monster. I was a bit surprised. But they may see things from him in practice that we don't see.

If Sacramento went for a wing at 5 I could see them trading 10 for Ricky. Draft Monk at 7 (Isaac if he's there), Collins or Markkanen at 10 and give George Hill our cap space. I know that's probably going too young, but shooting, more youth and a veteran PG to replace Ricky until Dunn is ready. Highly unrealistic, but fun to think about.

I can't remember what podcast it was but it was a draft podcast posted on this forum but they mentioned that some of the bigger market teams should consider drafting super complimentary players...like Ingram. Basically with a guy like that he may not be a star but he probably will end up being able to play with anyone that you bring in later. That may be some of what Magic likes about him too. It was an interesting thought.

If Jonathan Isaac is gone at 7.
7th pick to Denver for Gary Harris and 13th pick.
Draft Anunoby at 13.
Sign PJ Tucker, Taj Gibson and another vet big.
Rubio / Dunn / Jones
LaVine / Harris / D League
Wiggins / Tucker / Anunoby
Dieng / Belly / FA
KAT / Gibson / Aldrich

I'd be really surprised if Denver would do that. I'm sure we'd have to throw in somebody else (Tyus? Muhammad S&T?) but whoa, I'd like that offseason! That would really help out our defense, Anunoby and Tucker would give us a lot of flexibility on that end, and Harris and Gibson are both solid two-way players. Harris would be a step up from Muhammad, and Gibson would be a great hustle, glue guy. I highly doubt Denver would do that unless somebody like Fox or Monk or Jackson fell to 7. Harris is a very good young player. But if we could pull that off, I'd be pretty happy. Thibs might even have to use more than a 8 man rotation during the regular season!

Do not sign PJ Tucker. He's 32 years old and showing big time signs of slowing down. He couldn't stay in shape this year, and thus couldn't stay in front of anybody. He would be an instantly regrettable signing.

Wha? I watched PJ Tucker play at least a half dozen games after he was traded to the Raptors and he looked good defensively to me.
Go to youtube and search "PJ Tucker defense," and you'll see several defensive game tape highlights from this year. Now try searching just about anybody on our roster with the word defense and see what comes up. It ain't pretty. It's obviously not the best measure of overall defensive impact, but I think he'd clearly be a step up defensively from about 80% of our roster and digging around in stats on 82games and other websites also indicates he's had a positive impact. Phoenix was +2 per 100 possessions with him on the floor vs. him off, and Toronto was +4.2 with him on the floor vs. with him off, with much of that impact coming defensively. By comparison, our best guys in that measure this year were Dieng at +3.8, Wiggins at +3, Bjelica +2.5, and Towns at +1.9 (LaVine's numbers were ugly, -5, and Tyus was at +3.3, which is pretty good, although it was in limited minutes so I wouldn't count it as much). So Tucker would be a step up from our guys, plus he can defend 3 or even 4 positions and he can shoot the 3 a little and he wouldn't take as many shots away from our young guys. In my view, that sounds like a very good role player for us.

Yeah, I'm in the camp that believes Tucker would be a good signing. I think it's a realistic choice as well being that he's not a high profile free agent and Thibs is on the lookout for a perimeter defender and toughness -- sorry, Wiggins fanatics. I also think it'd be logical to assume Minnesota pursues Taj Gibson. We've thrown his name around here for years on the trade boards. Again, he's not a high profile free agent, but he's a tough, defensive presence at a position that we're definitely weak at. He's also been a supporter of Thibodeau through thick and thin and I can remember him greeting Thibs before one of the Wolves/Bulls games.
We should shoot for a player of Paul Millsap's caliber, and we have the cap flexibility right now to make that happen, but adding those two guys wouldn't be the worst off-season by any means. We'd definitely get tougher as a team and you'd have to believe the team defense would improve, as well as adding some much-needed {productive} veteran play in the mix.

I also think Tucker would be a terrific addition to this roster. Since I didn't see any of the Toronto/Cavs series, I wonder if Tucker struggled defensively in that series and that is the basis for Cool's negative opinion, because I think he is still a gritty, effective defender. Here are my positives about a Tucker signing:
1) He would instantly become our starter at SF, allowing Wig to play SG where he has been more effective offensively and defensively (BTW, I'm still a Zach guy, so even though I prefer him as a 6th man, I think he would have as many minutes as Tucker in a Wig/Tucker/Zach wing rotation.
2) Defense has been a huge issue for this club, and installing Tucker in the starting lineup instantly makes a better defending team. I also like Wig guarding the weaker wing.
3) Defensive rebounding has also been an issue, and Tucker is one of the best in this area. His "contested rebound" numbers are always among the league best.
4) He doesn't need a lot of touches on offense, leaving more shots for our more proficient scorers. He will hit a nice percentage of his threes, though, so he can't be ignored by defenses.
5) He is a very good clubhouse guy, and is the type of veteran that would be helpful to our developing stars. KAT and Wig need to see a veteran on the court who never takes a play off.
6) Being 32 and a marginal offensive player, I don't think he would cost very much. He's exactly the kind of veteran we need next to our potential superstars, especially since his salary will likely be rather low.
7) According to Doogie, he wants to come here. I suspect that a lot of his interest is the chance to start and be a leader on a developing team.
Tucker is a good transition guy for us until Zach and Wig are ready to pair up as our starting wings (they are ready now offensively, but far from ready defensively). I'd like to see Thibs get this deal done on an attractive contract.
