Could the Kings go on a fire sale now dealing any vet player possible for picks? It could get interesting.
A few of us have been begging for this already... why aren't more teams trying to deal with Orlando and Sacramento. Time after time... they've proven that they're ending up on the wrong side of the trade.
That team goes right down to Brooklyn's level now. In fact, they might be worse. Lin is returning soon to Brooklyn and that makes them better (Lin + Lopez >> any 2 from the Kings).
And I'd have ZERO faith that the Kings are making the right choices moving forward. There's simply too much evidence to support the opposite take at this point.
I just looked at the Kings draft situation. I had forgotten about some of those deals. I spent too much time in my defense of the deal. So...who should the Wolves be trying to call the Kings about to steal or get paid to take away?
Imagine if the Kings still had that Isaiah Thomas guy. Thomas and Cousins would be enough to build around. Oh well right?
That's the crazy thing... I just looked at that roster. I'm entirely unimpressed.
I don't know. It's not a young team. There's nobody with immense potential languishing on the bench. It really is a terrible situation. As noted, at least Brooklyn has something. They know the Russian owner F'd up by meddling early on. At least they have put two basketball guys more in charge... Sean Marks and Atkinson. So they're going to suck, but at least there's hope that smart guys who know basketball are making the decisions to move forward and that the owner learned from his mistakes.
Sacramento has Vivek running the show. And a woefully unprepared and overwhelmed Vlade Divac as a figurehead. There's no plan. There's no hope. They are starting at Ground Zero.
They have a coach in Dave Joerger that might know more than anyone else. What's crazy? He basically forced the issue to get to...the Kings. So...yeah
Abe there may not be a young star talent with the Kings but I like the potential of some of the young guys. Skal was a guy that months ago was considered one of the top young talents. Malachi Richardson is a guy I liked quite a bit and they got both guys at terrific value spots in last year's draft.
Let me ask this question. Let's assume another team made this move let's say a Memphis or heck even the Nets? Would we be looking at this move differently? I think so.
Ultimately not paying Cousins all that money might actually be kinda smart. I think they should have gotten more for him though. We will see what Heild and the draft pick turn out to be. Typically trading superstar talents like Cousins...history isn't on the Kings side.
But that's a big part of why I hate the trade.
Teams are going to be leery of taking Cousins if they don't know whether they'll have him beyond next season.
But if they knew they could take him (for the next 5 years)... they'd offer up more for him. That's the part I don't get.
So at least now the Kings can tank officially and grab a potential star in an allegedly loaded draft right? Not so fast. Even if the Kings plummet down the standings... they might not even get to be rewarded for it. The 76ers have the right to swap picks with them this season.
[Note: And the 76ers get the Kings 2019 1st round pick. Yikes.]
The 76ers got more for nothing than the kings got for cousins
Yeah something like that and Stauskus is 2 months older than Heild.

I did not know the sixers could swap pick with the king and the pelicans pick is top 3 protected. That makes the kings even more of a joke. No way they can they get a top 3 pick anymore unless the sixers somehow won the lottery again or get 2 and kings draft 3( hingly unlikely). Dave jeorger is a favorite if mine but he is working for a bunch of amateurs with vivek and vlade here

I can't defend the Kings management for all their blunders, but I get the sense this about giving the franchise a fresh start. They wanted to move on from Cousins and were willing to take the best deal they could get today. The Pelicans might have similar feelings in time.

Like someone said earlier in this thread maybe the Kings realized paying Cousins all that money was going to be a big mistake. That makes sense they have nobody else that's near a star and Cousins isn't getting younger. It's not a good look to make a big scene about keeping him and have him say the right things about saying and then deal him for what pretty much everyone says is a fleecing. I'm not saying teams don't do stuff like that plenty often but it doesn't look great.
I said as a BIGTIME Cousins guy before that draft (Considers him the most talented player in that draft and I stand by it) he likely couldn't be THE guy on your team or there would be problems. He couldn't be THE leader. Will he and Gentry get along that's a real question. Davis is their top player and can be their guy and Cousins can do his thing. Will that work? IDK but for what NO gave up its worth a shot they needed more talent next to Davis they didn't really have another star Jrue Holiday was probably the closest thing to an all star level player when he was healthy.

Even Vlade has come out and said he had a better deal on the table 2 days ago. They're a joke. We should try to get Collison from them for a ham sandwich while we can.

Having gotten to know this board fairly well even if a trade offer was on the table fans here would over value our current players and shun the deal. But since that didn't happen typical apathy sets in. SOP around Minnesota sports scene I think.

People saw this coming years ago.....you just knew he wasn't going to last in Sacramento. Hell, I'm surprised he was there as long as he was.
I'm still convinced that consistent success will only come to him if put on a team with a strong culture and strong veterans already in place. Is New Orleans that place? I'm not so sure. Davis is younger than Cousins and Holiday is a nice piece, but has had his own ups and downs (both personally and professionally).

I suspect I'm the only one here who thinks champagne corks have ben popping all day at Kings HQ. They get rid of a known troublemaker...on and off the court...and they get back two former top six picks (one who was highly regarded coming out of last year's draft), another first round pick almost certainly destined to be a lottery pick, and another second. All this in exchange for a guy who, despite being very productive, has never been able to lead his team to the playoffs...and is destined to be done in 16 months anyway.
I agree with the general consensus here Kings' management is generally bat shit crazy, but I don't see any craziness in this deal...three lottery picks and a second rounder in exchange for a nutcase loser like Boogie sounds like grand theft larceny to me.

I'm not sure about an all out declaration of independence type celebration, but I tend to agree with you that the Kings relish the chance to move forward without him. The Pels will find out soon enough why he came so cheap.

Stay to the end. I saw that entire episode. It's the earliest signs you see the train accelerate on it way to a horrific trainwreck. I swear you can see Chris Mullin decided instantly to leave the Kings the moment Vivek forces the entire front office to welcome Nik Stauskas with a super duper awkward "Nik Rocks" cry. Even Stauskas was embarrassed.
Remember, this was around the time Vivek was trying to find support for his 4 vs. 5 defensive approach with one cherry picker standing on the other end... I know Cousins has issues. But I don't think people realize how exacerbated they were in Sacramento with the likes of Vivek in charge. Imagine David Kahn with even more clout... that's the KIngs.
Exactly, also think of this scenario the kings suck they get the first pick. Oh wait that is right the 76ers have the right to swap picks with them (also have their 2019 1st) because they traded that and Stauskas for nothing. Vivek and Vlade are garbage.
Unlikely but their is a scenario where the pelicans and kings get top 3 picks. But the pelicans pick is top 3 protected and they have to swap their own pick with the 76ers let's say the 7th pick.
So cousins and Casspi for Evans, Hield, Galloway (who they are cutting) and the 7th pick that is a possibility
Thanks for that video. To add to that word is Vivek LOVES Buddy he was the only owner that went to his pro day. So it looks like Buddy really was a centerpiece to this deal.
