Maybe.

But the 1996 season was pretty cool, too. Marbury and Garnett looked like a fantastic duo... and even opposing star players were marveling at their potential.

I was thinking the same thing Abe. In addition they had Googs and Dean Garrett was looking like a solid starting center. I think the reason to be more excited about this team compared to that one is the wolves have a deeper pool of young talent behind the ultra talented duos this year than that roster did.

Maybe.

But Gugliotta was pretty solid and "only" 27. I'm guessing we had our share of Chris Carr fans (He's a steal. He's legit!).

[Note: And how dare you dismiss Shane Heal. How dare you!!!]

The ROY race is already over in my opinion. Nobody is doing as much as KAT and he's doing it all well or better than the rest. The guy could realistically average close to 20/10/3 blocks once his offensive efficiency goes up (only shooting 48.9% from the field is a little low for a big who's not shooting many 3's yet). Towns is a borderline all-star right now. NBAdotcom has an advanced stat call PIE (player impact estimate) which is an estimate of a players or team's contributions and impact on a game. PIE shows what % of a game events did that player or team achieve. Towns leads all Centers in the league and is 3rd in the NBA behind Steph and Blake. If he plays this well moving forward he may get a legitimate all-star nod.

I took Carr into consideration but not Shane Heal. I feel a great sense of shame.

I think we both agree it's not a complete no brainer between the 2 up and coming teams then and now of which one was more exciting. I would still give the edge to the current one but also consider the roster from the past only had 13 players on it.

I think it was you that mentioned a few times the league is deeper now than it has been. I tend to agree. KG and Marbury alone back then would have been a really good combo and they had Googs who was terrific and some other pieces that were dexent enough for where they were at the time. I think now you need one more pretty good player than maybe you needed then...maybe.

I'm not surprised at this information, but rather who it's coming from on the board. And I don't disagree with your take; I too believe Towns is the runaway ROY candidate who should potentially garner All-Star and maybe even DPOY consideration, if he keeps this up.

It's just that... It's only been seven games... You can't use seven (or 20) games to determine anything on this board...

I just don't think there are enough quality C's in the league to knock him down repeatedly enough. He's going to catch breaks often in the schedule to regain any efficiency/confidence/whatever to keep the run going. And then if he starts to run out of steam, Pek will be back to take the banging load off his table and allow him to play even easier minutes. I just think everything is setup for a special run. Towns doesn't have to run the gauntlet most nights that guys like Ricky and Wiggins do because his position is pretty thin across the league with talent that can just dominate him on both sides of the ball and if you can win on one side of the ball almost every night then you can stay effective for the whole year. So yes 7 games is too small a sample size, but his road is setup perfectly for a special run from him. When Pek comes back he'll have protection pretty much everywhere to shine when he's on and give him outlets when he's not to still be able to be a positive player. We didn't have that protection with Wiggins and Wiggins still ran away with the ROY.

In all of his strengths he has exceeded my expectations, especially with his rebounding. He pulled some big boards in that Atlanta game that took some fight. I can't wait to see him really start working on his deficiencies (going left, hitting jumpers) once teams have their scouting reports down on him. Great foundation to work with so far, he really is going to be awesome.

The thing I can't get over is his FT%. He's freakin' Steph Curry from the line! Who the hell has ever combined that level of touch from the line and power on the interior in terms of blocks and rebounds? God, once he gets the green light to shoot 3's and get comfortable out there, he is going to be an MVP candidate. It's just ridiculous. Pray that he stays healthy.
