II agree that we looked very good last year before Ricky got hurt. The difference this year is that the defense hasn't completely fallen apart when Ricky has been out (almost half the games this year now) and we have played pretty well. And we are much tougher at the end of games. That's what I attribute to Mitchell.

Sam is not a good head coach. This team has won a couple games in spite of Sam's coaching tactics during the games. This team added KG, Towns, Prince and essentially Rubio which is big reason for the defensive improvement. When you add those defenders and focus on defense in training camp, you should be a good defense. I will say however Sam's focus on the defense and the improvement with the players has me believing he can be a first or second assistant in charge of the defense. We need a better head coach though. We need someone who can manage the rotation better so we don't end up with the hockey shifts for long periods of time. We have two borderline all-stars this year in Wiggins and Towns. When teams have those they can usually hover around .500 pretty easily.

Flip said all offseason defense was going to be a priority for everybody so maybe he would have spent a bunch of time on it too idk. My speculation though is that the defensice philosophy may have been very different from what Sam is doing. Flip loved that zone look I don't think Sam spends much time on any of that.
Let's be honest before TC nobody except LST (who believed in Sam) thought these coaches had it in them to be a true defensive mind to improve the defense. I think everyone here is willing to give Sam and the staff some credit for the defensive turnaround. The Wolea also have a couple guy like Rubio KG and Prince who help the defense and Towns and Wiggins are young guys that have been worthwhile in that sense as well. It's pretty tough to be good defensively without good defenders but defense is a lot about playing as a team also.
Cam says its a players league. That's a good point to consider. Honestly I can see that both as a positive and negative for Sam. With the team right now it's a positive. In the future it may not be. The question most of us have is whether Sam can grow/change/adapt as a coach over time. The other question is whether he has the right assistants as the needs of this team changes. As I said before I think the coaching staff that is in place now seems to be pretty good but as time goes on maybe a different voice or skill set might be needed.
