CoolBreeze's 2 Things I Didn't Like Plus 1 - Quarter Pole Edition
Re: CoolBreeze's 2 Things I Didn't Like Plus 1 - Quarter Pole Edition
A couple interesting things from the interwar a I thought would be worthwhile to post here.
1. I think a pretty good and balanced write up of Sam Mitchell.

2. Fun stat

Top 5 points per possession after Timeout:
1. Spurs (SHOCKER)
2. Raptors
3. Warriors (STUNNING)
4. Hornets
5. Timberwolves (WHAT)

We're sick of paying to watch losers.
Thank you for proving my point. Jazz, Blazers, Kings are all way ahead of us in attendance, always are. Because their fans go to support their team. Not to wait until their team earns it. Granted they don't have hockey teams competing for attendance, but it is a different mentality.
I don't have a problem with Minnesota fans being discretionary, but if no one shows up we aren't going to have a home court advantage.
We live in the state of hockey. Literally all the way down to the pee-wee level this state is divided. It's hard to be a two winter sport city with hardcore followings for both that basically start from birth. It gets even harder when one team is a perennial playoff team led by a Minnesota bred superstar and the other was just the worst team in the league last year and hasn't made the playoffs in over a decade. Toronto is the opposite. Their hockey has been bad for the past several seasons while their basketball never stayed down for too long between the transitions from Vinsanity to Bosh to now Lowry (usually 4-5 year playoff gaps). The Maple Leafs have made the playoffs once in the last 10 years. If they weren't in Canada they would basically be the Wolves of hockey, but luckily they've sucked in a great hockey market.

That meets my eye test, monster, but thanks for the data. I mentioned in a game thread one night how crisp our offense generally looks after a timeout, and Jim Peterson has mentioned it several times. We usually end up with a good look after a timeout (often Wig coming off of a screen) and often a score. Kind of runs contrary to the prevailing opinion here that Mitchell can't coach offense...any time you can be in a top 5 with the Spurs and the Warriors, you're doing something right! The problem is our offense doesn't look as crisp when we're not coming out of a timeout, and that's an issue. I chalk that up to the youth of our team and how many of our guys in their first three years are still not fully adapted to the NBA game. They look great when they are told what to do during a timeout, but they have a difficult time sustaining it throughout the game. This is not unusual and to be expected. Our best players are very young and still learning the game...all part of the maturation process.

How this type of fan culture gets formed and sustained? That's a good question. Like anything, it requires a few ambitious and charismatic individuals to get something started. A few years ago, the Timberwolves had a group of fans known as Los Locos which some of you are probably pretty familiar with. I have no idea if they still exist or not, but they definitely tried to start something that never really took off beyond their small group of folks. It would be nice if that could get re-kindled again and turn into something bigger.
What's interesting in that piece about the Portland Timbers is that they have largely been mediocre for most of their existence. People do it for the overall experience and not just the product on the pitch. Hell, look at us? We've been rooting for, analyzing, and obsessing over a losing team for years now!
Andrew Bogut had an interesting idea when with Milwaukee. He gave tickets to 100 people in one section. And they had to audition to be part of the group... obviously, the more rowdy, the better the odds of getting the tickets.

Let's go "Rubio's Bobos"...
I love this idea. Dsmn, that arena is dead most nights, and 100 crazy fans could have an impact. I just forwarded this article to my good friend who is one of the largest minority owners in Glen's group telling him to present it to Glen and Milt. 100 upper deck seats wouldn't be much more than $100-125K for the season...pocket change for a guy like Rubio who is making $13 million this year...to put that into perspective, it's the equivalent of a $1000 investment for a guy making $100K a year. Or I suggested maybe the team might want to invest the $100K as a way to try to regain our home court advantage.
I'll let you guys know what he says!
I bet Rubio would be very interested in that it seems like it would be something he would be into.
I just got an email back from my buddy who thought the Rubio's Bobos idea was terrific. He forwarded my email on to Glen with a note saying they needed to look into something like that. I'm going to see my friend at breakfast tomorrow, so I'll find out of Glen is doing anything about it. At least TC will be jumping on Wednesday...always is when the Lakers are in town. Sheesh.

(Monster, I just saw you posted the AWOW article I had posted in another thread. Sorry I missed your original post since you had beaten me to it).

Can I take credit for the name... when I interview for a job with the Timberwolves marketing department?

You definitely get credit for the name, and the idea, when the Wolves eventually go with it.
As for the marketing job, it doesn't look good. The first question my friend asked me was how many wins you predicted in the pre-season poll. When I gave him the answer, he tossed your resume in the wastebasket.

I only went with my prediction because I didn't want to lose to you by one "victory" again this season.
