PG - Rubio or Teague, doesn't really matter
SG - Butler
SF - George
PF - who cares
C - KAT
That's a team that would instantly contend. It punts our first rookie max out a year (only KAT now) while leaving open the possibility of re-signing Paul George.
I wonder how many vets would take a discount to join a core of KAT/Butler/George?
One issue with that Q is that if George does resign he would possibly cost a ton more money than Wiggins and of course there is no assurances he comes back.
Despite what LST keeps putting forth i see no indications that a Thibs is questioning if Wiggins is a significant piece moving forward. We will see.

No doubt Thibs is a huge fan of Wiggins and is not going to give up on him. We'll see if he can mold him into the two-way all star we had all hoped for when originally traded here for Kevin Love.

They mentioned briefly about a lot of free agents available... but not much money. And the frustration players will have with agents and the NBA's sudden lower salary cap.
Point being... short deals for semi-decent free agents are definitely in play?
All the more reason to wish we hadn't given Gibson 14m and talked Teague down a few mill too. It could have made a big difference in landing some solid bench guys.

I just saw the Patrick Patterson deal.
He's not a game changer... but that was for less than I would have expected.

I have less problem with giving Teague the money we did and moving quick. We could have been in a situation where we were left without a legit starting PG and/or having poor leverage to have to pay up because there were no other options. Hill still got paid a decent amount.
Gibson? Yeah that's harder to defend. Let's see how this plays out. There will be some guys that settle for their over 2 million in vet min salary to come here.

Teague deal was rather fair. He is a very good player, and got paid like one. Taj got paid like an average player did last summer. Everyone could see that there would be bargains this year after the first few days, except Thibs I guess.

Rubio wasn't being traded without a verbal commitment. You can bank on that. And I know Teague is a good player, but I find it hard to believe they weren't able to pitch building a contending team to both those guys by trying to keep 4-5 extra mill available to put towards a shooter. Hill is a little better and got about the same money.
How do other teams always seem to pull it off, but this summer was our chance and we couldn't do it. That's what I don't get and it's kinda frustrating. So much for guys flocking to play with the improved Wolves post Butler trade.

If we had held onto Rubio and signed someone like Patrick Patterson at PF, it would have allowed us to go find a very solid wing that can backup Butler and Wiggins. Now we're on a desperate fishing expedition....
I think OKC has played this offseason absolutely beautifully. Similar to the Wolves, they really struggled with 3-point shooting last year. What did they do? Unloaded two mediocre players in Sabonis and Oladipo for a superstar that can shoot and offload some of the ball handling from Westbrook in Paul George, then signed a PF that can shoot to a very cheap deal. They are now a legitimate threat in the West because they addressed by far their biggest need without really sacrificing anything.
Yes they played things out really well. Look at the money aspect of what they did also. Dipo and Sabonis were like 23.5 million and George and Patterson will be around 24.5 million. Lol It's pretty easy to argue that for this season they got better players in both and a fairly neglegable amount of money to do so.
Now about the next season when the Lakers use cap space to sign George...
Like Phenom said someone taking Dipo's contract isn't all bad. I'm still a fan of his but let's say the worst happens for OKC in a year and Westbrook and PG walk...they will have a bunch of cap space and a pretty young roster to work with.
Exactly Monster. They had absolutely nothing to lose, as they were only going to hit a wall in the first or second round of the playoffs again with just Westbrook. Now they are in the mix for the top 3 or 4 in the Conference. And if Westbrook and Paul George bolt, they can start with a clean slate.

The hill thing has been beaten to death. His skill set is better, but his age and injury history affected his price. If healthy, like Teague, no doubt he gets closer to 24mil per. Even though the league is saturated with PGs there weren't many on the market who are both capable of filling our need and starting full time. After Teague there was only Patty Mills who was paid 12.5 mil per by the Spurs and has never been the full time starter. For us to pry him from there would have been like 15mil per. I'd choose Teague.
Ive warmed up to the Butler trade, and I love Rubio but Teague is the better fit and we got a 1st. I won't be convinced on the Taj deal.

Looks like we don't need to worry about Young in Thibs' doghouse.
