And again, it's not a third string PG because we don't even have a backup. The player is not going to be great or particularly skilled, but we have a fairly important job that our offense relies on every minute Mo isn't on the floor and we have nobody who can fill it right now. That hurts our whole offense. Watch how discombobulated and chaotic our offense is when Mo isn't in there (and sometimes when he is).
I'm trying to think of an analogy here to demonstrate what I mean by we need something cheap and minor to make the valuable stuff work. Maybe it's like having a car with no headlights. You can drive it all you want during the day, no problem, and a headlight is a really basic part, way less important than many of the other parts, and dirt cheap. But without it, you can't drive at night (or at least it's ugly if you do!). A backup PG is a little like that. A little anyway. So why not dump our 3rd spare tire (Bud) in the alley and run down to AutoZone to buy a cheap headlight so we can drive at night? Ok, not the best analogy, but do you see what I mean?
I WANT the young guys to develop and grow. I'm all for the future. I think most of us agree on that. But I think NOT getting a backup PG is actually preventing them from getting those opportunities because we're throwing them out there without anybody to run the offense and get them the ball.
I agree 100% with this. I think giving Lavine some experience at the point is good. But he should be developing his skills at the 2 as well. He really has some great tools to be a unique combo guard. Having another 1 who is confident running an offence would help that development along.
I think if you are stuck playing Hummel at Center and Brewer at PG, it's time to look around to see if there are better options. We have some guys who barely play - even on a depleted roster. Other guys who are playing out of position. If there is a move out there that can help - I'm all for it. I think the talent on this team is much better than they have been playing recently. As Drew wrote - a minor tweak might make a big difference. And even if it doesn't...what are we really out for trying? Taylor's money? As a paying ticket member....I'm not going to feel too bad. I'm not going to be content watching them stink it up another year to draft the next Derrick Williams with their lotto pick.
I get both sides of the argument, but I would be super okay with trading/cutting Budinger to bring in a point guard. There's two that I'd vouch for: Gal Mekel and Brady Heslip. Not only do we add a much-needed guard, but we get rid of a guy who hasn't produced since we acquired him. AND we'd have more minutes for LaVine and Robinson with Budinger being gone.
That, to me, makes sense in all aspects. Bud's going to get paid either way, and I don't think anyone can argue that he's been a positive producer who warrants minutes. Robinson should be getting burn by now, even if it's in limited supply.
Bud goes out, PG comes in, LaVine and Robinson get more floor time at the wings.
Here's the good news: The fact that I mentioned Hummel, Budinger & GR3 as guys who I'd be ok with dumping all but guarantees one (if not all) will have career nights tonight. You're welcome!

Well, we are playing the Lakers tonight, so that wouldn't surprise me. :)

But don't forget Wes Johnson will be showing up big - LOL! Ex Wolves always stick it to us.

No, I just can't take it anymore. Maybe some of you have more patience or something. But I just don't buy it. And I think it's false hope. How many high picks have we had now since KG left? A dozen or more? And where did it get us? I'm sick of tanking. Leave it for the Sixers.
And on the PG issue, as I said, it's not going to get us out of the lottery, it's just going to help us be more competitive, help the young guys develop by giving us a real offense, and probably win a few more games. I think that's worth cutting Bud and giving up a couple ping pong balls.
Then you should probably go root for someone else for a few years because even at full strength we weren't going to be a .500 team this year. You can want us to win all you want. We are just too young and in too tough of a conference to win this year and probably next year as well. Given how Flip has drafted the past two years, I am more than confident in him going forward with higher picks. He's earned that faith.
It's too early to conclude if Flip has drafted well or not. Let's face it, David Kahn set the bar about as low as one can possibly go. While Dieng and Shabazz are at least rotation-worthy players, neither have shown that they are above average rotation players yet. May be they will eventually, may be they won't. But neither are there yet. And LaVine, well, he might be a 3-4 year project. So far, he's done nothing but hurt us while on the court. That's fine from a developmental standpoint....if he actually develops. Time will tell.
