This is going to be intense 4 hours. Think about the Padres literally have 10 guys that other teams want on there teams.
It's going to be interesting, jester. I don't know where I am on this. So many teams are going "all in" and giving up great prospects in an attempt to win it all this year, and some (like Toronto) don't seem to have much of a chance. With so many teams trying to win this year, maybe Terry decides this isn't his year, and he holds on to his prospects and tries to improve the bullpen from within (Duffey, Berrios). I wouldn't be upset if that was his final decision.
But on the other hand, we seem to have more outfielders than we need. Hicks, Buxton, Rosario, Hunter, Arcia, Kepler, Walker all have a chance of being long-time starters, and maybe even Sano if they can't find an infield position. I wouldn't want to give up any of these guys for a 3-month rental, but I would fro a guy we could control for a few years.
Interesting that Stephan Gonsalves and Kohl Stewart swapped rotation positions. Holding out Stewart for a possible trade?

I'm telling you I think there on a James Sheilds trade with the Padres. Kohl Stewart and Nolasco and filler probably Arcia for Sheilds and Benoit. Makes sense for the twins. Shields is signed for two more years after this year. This give us an ace also a guy to start the wild card game and a rental bullpen arm. They take on Nolasco contract so essentially were only paying 5 more million a year for Sheilds.
Idk I'm just spit balling what do you think?

FWIW Jim Bowdon on ESPN this morning said nobody wants to touch Sheilds contract.
Like LST said why sell out this year the chances of catching the Royals are probably not good and then you are looking at just 1 game to get in. Like LST said we have a ton of prospects and at some point you can't keep them all. I am not really looking for a big move so I won't be dissappointed if they do nothin. There will be other opportunities to add guys down the road as well.

Quality trade now if they can get Benoit I would be happy. These guys on mlb network radio are blasting the twins for not making moves, but what do they want us to do there's no short stops available and no catchers maybe Lucroy but I doubt it. All they can do is maybe find a starter pitcher and bullpen arms. We already have a glut of outfielders and Mauer shoe horns us from having Sano play first and opening up the DH slot.
As for the trade gave up a young devolping arm but guy is at least 5 years away from being a major leaguer if he makes it. Also nice to have Jepsen under control for 2016 as well.

I may be in the minority here, but I don't like this deal. Jepsen is down this year and has really hurt the Rays (5 losses and 4 blown saves, compared to 2 wins and 5 saves...not very good). And Hu is one of my favorite prospects. Jester, I don't agree that he is 5 years away from the majors. Even though he's only 21, he showed he was ready for AAA ball when he pitched a 2-hitter in a spot start in Rochester. I honestly would have preferred giving them Kohl Stewart over Chih-Wei Hu, but I wouldn't have done that deal either.
That said, Jepsen is an upgrade over the guys we are putting out there now. If we stayed in the race, I would have preferred promoting Berrios and/or Duffey and trying them in set up roles, rather than giving up a good prospect for a 31-year-old set up guy. I like Terry Ryan and usually support his moves, but this one has me scratching my head a little.

hmm...I'm doing some further study here, and I don't know that Jepsen is much of an upgrade over what we were sending out in the 7th and 8th. In his last 18 appearances, he has a 4.60 ERA and a 24% line drive rate...ouch! The Rays have to be delighted to get Hu in exchange for a guy who was hurting them.

I think Jepson has a major league track record so you assume he gets back to being effective. Having said that I am not a big fan of trading for relief pitchers with closers or maybe uber elite setup men as exceptions. Why relief pitchers are easy to fall out of whatever made them good and I seems that who knows who will turn up as a good reliever. The Twins have kinda gotten burned a bit by trading for relievers so that probably doesn't help my perspective but relief pitchers are a tough bunch to predict. The Twins have really struggled so even Jepson's poor numbers recently may be an upgrade! Lol

I think your overvaluing Hu just a little bit, I mean been reading on him and I can't find anyone who thinks he will be more that a 4th or 5th starter. They don't even know if his palmball is good enough to get ppl out in the majors. You have to give up something to get something, I just think this trade was fair value, but if things roll the right way for the twins in the next 5 years then Hu wouldn't even crack our rotation.
Jepsen has a 2.81 ERA with 34 strikeouts and 20 walks in 41 2/3 innings with Tampa Bay this year. He struck out 75 in 64 innings last year. This is a power arm that we need even if he's a bit over rated.

Good article on the trade, like I said before I hate dealing with the Rays because of there's one thing they know it's pitching, so even though I think this even trade I'm very worried because it's the Rays.
