When TC traded Vando, Juancho and Beasley to the Wolves way back when, it was because he knew he wasn't going to resign them in free agency or give them extensions. That is a good working precedent for how he may view NAW currently. I think if he keeps him past the trade deadline it means there is a scenario to bring him back this summer or perhaps they feel he is needed to make a title push this year but that seems unlikely.

Have any of you noticed the slew of incredibly ridiculous Wolves trade ideas that get posted on “Sporting News”? This is one of them. There are layers of ridiculousness in this proposal, which mentions “sweetening the deal with draft capital.” What capital? Randle plus the Detroit pick? It mentions adding players to sweeten the deal, apparently unaware we can’t aggregate players since we’re over the second apron.

Yeah most of these trades ignore the apron tax rules. Fox makes more than Randle so it's not legal as long as we are in the 2nd tax apron. As far as assets, we do have Utah's 2nd round pick this year which if the season ended today would be the 35th pick in the draft in a strong draft. If Detroit pick conveys, we would have two solid draft picks.

Yes, Utah’s 2nd round pick and Detroit’s first (likely this year or next) are nice draft assets but neither one would be enough, combined with Julius, to get Fox even if CBA rules allowed the trade. Perhaps one or both of those picks can help us land a more realistic trade target. But I’d hold both picks until draft day to see what opportunities present themselves. I don’t want to give up valuable draft assets to clear Randle’s salary. The best way to limit a the consequences of a mistake is to stop making more mistakes to correct the previous one.

Ball, Randle, White lead three-team swap

Minnesota Timberwolves get: guard Coby White (via CHI), forward John Collins (via UTAH)

Chicago Bulls get: forward Julius Randle (via MIN), guard Jordan Clarkson (via UTAH)

Utah Jazz get: forward Jaden McDaniels (via MIN), guard Lonzo Ball (via CHI), guard Chris Duarte (via CHI)

Just saw this one on ESPN. Looks like it violates the 2nd apron restriction on aggregating outgoing salaries, but maybe aggregation is OK in a multi-team trade when each of the outgoing players goes to a different team. Does anyone know?

Assuming it’s permitted, what are your thoughts on this trade? For the record, I wouldn’t do it.

I think it would have to be broken up into two separate trades..maybe I'm not sure with the rules. Say one trade where Julius gets traded for Collins and the 2nd trade where Jaden gets traded for White.

Yes, as long as the trade works as two separate trades. It's when we have to combine two players in order to make salaries match that we get in trouble...

Hmm. Anyway, assuming again that it’s legal, here are some of my thoughts. In the plus column, it would save the Wolves around $20 million, which would definitely allow what Wolves re-sign Naz and even NAW while still getting under the second apron. And I do think Collins would be a better fit than Randle. But on the negative side, White is a terrible defender and while he’s a decent three-point shooter at 36% he’s not even close to elite. He’s not a playmaker or game manager either. I’ve never been a big fan of his game. While Collins looks good and seems to fit well on paper, I have concerns about him. I always have doubts about players who keep getting moved from one team to the next. And I recall the Hawks were trying to unload him for years in spite of his good stats. Finally, after having some doubts about Jaden earlier this season, he’s put a long enough string of impressive games together to have me back on his bandwagon. He’s such an elite defender and now we’re starting to see his shooting and even his rebounding come around. The thought of going from Jaden to Kobe White leaves me cold. So I say no to the deal.

Agreed I don't think White for Jaden is great value. White does kill us the two times we play him every year, but I don't believe he is much of a defensive player. I know Jim Peterson loves Collins, every time we used to play Atlanta a few years ago Jim would gush over Collins calling him the best modern pf in the game. Collins has had some iffy years lately, and it's always hard to say if someone putting up stats on a bad team is actually what you are going to get. Utah has 5 guys averaging 15 or more we have 2, yet Utah is a bad team. Same thing with Lauri and Sexton, putting up good stats, but are they good players on a winning team?

Sporting news used to have legit or somewhat legit people writing for them now they are like a lot of these media outlets that let anyone with an electronic device write stuff or whatever. Maybe not quite that bad for sporting news but they have a lot of basically fan bloggers on there. Google suggests all kinds of "articles" for me and most of them are basically worthless. My supervisor that barely cares about sports could probably tell me something nearly as insightful and/or make up something more entertaining to me than what is often presented with these things. It gets old.
