Any chance we still trade Donaldson? Do they still have the ability to put guys on wavier and if they clear trade them?

That sucks. How much do you think Donaldson's contract impacted negotiations with Buck and Berrios?

Twins claimed RP Edgar Garcia off waivers from the Reds. He has struggled in the majors but his minor league numbers are interesting.

None or very little.

I think if Taylor Rogers was healthy they would've been packaged together together to be shipped out of here.

I still think a Buxton extension happens in the off-season. Especially now because they don't have worry about paying Berrios.

I don't see the problem of keeping Donaldson and just making him DH

Donaldson stats this year
272 at bats .250 avg .840 ops

Cruz stats this year

326 at bats .283 avg .880 OPS

When Donaldson plays your actually getting what's he's worth. The problem is keeping him healthy. So just make him the DH next year.

I think you do something in the middle playing him in the field but give him a lot of DH days. It will be interesting to see if Cruz signing back is something he or the Twins actually want to do. I'm with you I don't think Donaldson's contract is a big problem. Would I be against them trading him? No but it's not like he has dropped off and is at best a bench player. He is an overpaid starting level MLB player. His value goes even higher if he is able to play even 90 games in the field to combine with his bat. It's also possible some team decides to deal for him this offseason.

I agree with Jester I don't think Donaldson's contract really is a big factor for Buxton or Berrios getting a deal done. Donaldson has 2 years and then the 8 million buyout after that but really the money either Buxton or Berrios would get wouldn't start till 2023. I think the twins have a limit on what they want to pay those guys and in each case that may be fair.

It's worth remembering that it's not just whether you can sign Berrios to say a contract for 25 million. A year it's having that money to spend but now also having 2 nice prospects. Toronto used one of their prospects they got for their good pitcher to get Berrios. The Twins may end up paying prospects to get a player down the road or maybe a prospect they get for Berrios ends up being part of the team becoming good again. If either of the prospects hit that's also cheap players for a few years which is also nice. I would not be surprised if the Twins make some moves this offseason via trade. I'm not expecting it but it wouldn't surprise me.

As a Twins fan I like the prospects, but have no dream of them spending the money for a replacement. Now if they would turn around this offseason and sign an equal or better pitcher for 20M+ a year I would be surprised and excited.

So what prospects should be thinking about in 2022, 2023, and 2024?

I'm not sure if there is a pitcher I would want them to spend that kind of money on but I haven't really looked. Some people will never believe the Twins are willing to spend money. It's obvious they aren't going to go bonkers and just spend but I really don't think they are hamstrung and have a tight budget either. Smart teams have budgets. If you want to see what kind of season this has been look up their 40 man roster and you can see all kinds of guys that are still on the injured list. It's been an incredible bunch of bad luck for the team in so many ways.

I said this in trade deadline thread but it holds true to your question.

The Twins are banking on 2 of these 5 guys panning out in the next two year

Joe Ryan
Jhoan Duran
Jordy Blaze
Matt Canterino

If they don't there in a world of hurt. Our franchise doesn't have outstanding track record of Developing our own starting pitching.

Honestly I think resign Pineda to 4 mil 1 year deal. Have these guys battle it out for 2 spots and sign some vet starter like they did with shoemaker this year.

Take Cruz 13 million and Colome 6 million and fix the damn bullpen.

Between Donaldson, Rooker and Garver you can replace Cruz DH at bats and let Miranda play 3rd and when he needs a day off put Donaldson over there.

Matt Shoemaker has been lights out in St. Paul, and has made some curious comments which didn't sit well with Rocco. He said the Twins were trying to make him pitch in a way that didn't make him successful, and since he was sent down, he has reverted to his old style and found success. If this is true, this is a serous indictment of Wes Johnson...a guy many thought was a genius a couple years ago. I've pointed out how "unlucky" the Twins have been this season because all four of their offseason acquisitions are performing far worse than their career numbers, but Shoemaker's comments make me wonder if something else is going on here. Two questions:

1) What are the changes the Twins forced on Shoemaker?

2) Should Johnson be fired if he had a hand in all four pitcher performing so poorly this year?
