This is the biggest signing in Minnesota pro sports history since Kirk Cousins.

Cousins contract beats Donaldson easily though in terms of yearly salary and the fact that he got it fully guaranteed in a sport that doesn't really do that.

Now back to the actual Donaldson deal. IF...Donaldson actually keeps being a solid player for that 5th year so they pick up that option the Twins are basically gonna be paying him just over 20 million a year. This was a creative contract that COULD end up benefiting them IF Donaldson actually is worth the whole contract. Its a big if (unlikely honestly) BUT it also pushes some of the money to a later date if the contract doesn't work out. If the contract ends up being basically 4 years 92 million...like I have said before I'm in on that. Today my brother told me to put away my 3rd baseman's glove that I didn't need it because the Twins signed Donaldson. Nobody needs to see me play the hot corner anytime soon! lol

Now will we pay Odo and Berrios?

Will the Twins be open to trading infield prospects now?? (Royce Lewis)

It will be interesting to see what they do to open up a 40 man roster spot. My brother and I were speculating on who would be an option. My brother pointed out the rule changes that will be going I to effect in 2020. Rosters are expanded to 26 with a maximum of 13 pitchers. Also pitchers have to fave a minimum of 3 batters. These changes would help and hurt a guy like Ryne Harper because do you want him facing 3 straight batters? He has years of minor league Options so you can shuttle him back and forth. September call ups are also limited to 28 players. Matt Wisler is the other guy we assumed would be an option to move on from. We didn't see any position players that made any sense.

My brother also mentioned last night that the Twins have options of guys to play at 3b. They could take it easy with Donaldson lowering his workload. Obviously they could use him increasingly at DH it I would imagine you would want him playing at 3b a significant chunk of time of his contract because that adds value because of his defense.

As for prospects coming up...the Twins are in a good spot right now. They may not have a huge need to fill if the guys they have at their respective positions work out and stay relatively healthy. That's kinda how you want it. I saw one article that said Polonco was pretty bad defensively last year at 3rd and Donaldson would help a lot there. It's certainly possible there could be a position change coming at some point for Polonco. Meanwhile an article pointed out that the position players signed for the next few years cost 45 million. That's pretty reasonable. The Twins are in a pretty good spot. If Someone emerges....excellent it would give them options...maybe trade a good player currently on the roster because you have their replacement.

Probably 3years 50-60 mil

Honestly the Twins need to hit on there Young staarting pitching. Brusdar Graterol, Jordy Blaze, Jhoan Duran, Blayne Enlow. They need to be able got at least 2-4 on these guys panning out.

Also I heard this intresting payroll discussion. If you say sano gets his 4th year option the starting infield will be making

2020 35,373,333
2021 37,873,333
2022 41,039,999
2023 47 milish Arraez first year of arb dont know how much he will be making.

My point is we have our infield locked up for under 50 mil for the next 4 years even with a 23 mil contract put in there.

My point is...who are you getting for that money? 2018 Odo? That pitcher might be worth more like Gibson money. If Odo pitches well again the Twins or someone else might have to pay him more than this year but I'd rather pay a couple more million and feel like you know a bit more what you are (or aren't) getting than lock into say a 3 year deal for what you are saying (Which I think sounds about right) and find out you overpaid by maybe even double. And again that comes from a guy that likes Odo and...for that matter Gibson. Lol

Yep the Twins have those guys locked in plus Kepler on what looks like a great deal.

Yeah the steins need to hit some some of those guys but if they could also hit on at least a 4th starter type of the Smeltzer Dobnak Poppen etc types that would really help too. Paying even decent starters is a few million. Having some of those guys actually pitch well enough to be on a rotation of a good team would be big...plus they may be assets to move in a deal. There was a lot of weakness of the Twins for years after they feel off winning the division for a few years but developing starting pitching probably was the biggest faltering. It's got to be better almost just statistically although they have Berrios now so I guess they need to like actually do some good things. :)
