Would be another typical Glen move.
Not terrible on an interim basis. I see him as a place-holder, not as a long-term selection. How about Kevin McHale? I'm serious. He can coach. But would he want to come back here and coach?
That's not a bad suggestion. He would be good with KAT and I think his approach would work well with Wig too.
McHale has personality and the ability to relate to players -- characteristics that are critical to being successful as a head coach in today's NBA. I agree that McHale would be great for KAT.
You must be a glutton for punishment.
Bringing back the country club is EXACTLY what Glen would love to do.
I would have zero problem with bringing McHale back as head coach only! In fact I think he'd be the type to get the best from KAT and he has a track record of being a quality coach. I would want someone else in the PBO seat though.
You gotta understand something.
Glen is incapable of just letting McHale be a coach only. If he hires someone else to be a GM and that GM has a different philosophy than McHale, we all know which side Glen Taylor is gonna agree with. That's a no-win situation for any POBO. We lost out on Dennis Lindsey over Glen's reluctance to allow him to hire his own coach because he was so attached to McHale. It's just not doable.
The only real course of action now if Thibs goes is simply to let Layden be the GM the rest of the way, let either Greer or Saunders be interim head coach, interview as many outside unemployed candidates as you can, and reload the coaching staff once the season is over.
I disagree. I don't think there would be any issue with naming McHale interim coach for the 2018/2019 season. McHale gets no promise beyond that and the new PBO get's the authority to make the decision on the HC position next offseason. I just don't buy the idea that because something was one way, it must always be that way. I honestly think McHale has a lot more to offer the youth on this team as a 1 year bandaid than do most other options mentioned.

Does McHale sign up for that type of Rodeo?
Probably not. But maybe he feels some loyalty to the team and state, who knows? Doesn't matter though as apparently the Penguin is remaining.
McHale might sign up for that as a prove it type of deal. He and the team overachieves and he gets a long term deal. Just depends if he is bored with what he is doing now and wants to get a foot back in the door. If his prospects are slim, it might be worth it for him.
I can see the negative side that players might not buy in if he is just on an interim deal. But hey, I don't see anyone else making a difference,m especially to Wiggins.

I would think players are far more likely to buy in to an interim coach who also happens to be a HOF player! McHale was also very much a players coach, unlike the current gobblin. Honestly, I hadn't considered it until I read someone suggest him here, and I think of the available options, too young, or too unproven, or last name Thibedeau, he would be the best choice.

I'm a fan of McHale and agree that he might actually work well here given his strengths as a coach in the past. My concern is that his beef with Harden that got kinda nasty might have hurt some of his credibility around the league with players. Harden is kinda of a weird dude but that thing between him and McHale got pretty awkward and that played out after things didn't seem to go too well for them when it was player and coach.

The question is who can you get as an interim. I'm not a huge McHale guy, but my problem for him has more to do with the Front Office moves he made. I'd take him over promoting any of the assistants, thats all. A 1 year prove it deal. It's so late in the offseason with training camp starting, I guess I can't see getting a good coach and trying to force him to also fill in all the other positions too. It's just too late.
thedoper wrote:Can we please stop talking about McHale? You guys are scaring me.
Why is that Doper? He's proven some ability as a coah and he would be great with KAT.
The last thing this team needs is to be moving backwards into the old stable. McHale is fine in theory but it only further solidifies Glens low bar approach to building this team for the last 20 years.
