Along the same lines - so Russel is going to sign a near max/max deal to go to GS to fill in for a guy that is the cornerstone of their franchise and just signed a max deal - and they are openly talking about trading him BEFORE HE IS SIGNED OFFICIALLY. Why would any max player sign a deal knowing they will be traded at the deadline to a random team they have no control over?

It's not an if - its a when and it will likely be after Klay is healthy - so he won't even see the playoffs...either really shortsighted on Russel's part (and a reason to be glad we didnt sign him) or the allure of CA is really strong (ditto).

I've always thought DLO was a flake, but now even more so if this whole fiasco turns out to be what it is at face value. And yeah, I'm probably OK with it that we didn't land him. Again, he wasn't THAT good with Brooklyn last year.

I'd be interested to see a link to where the Warriors having stated publicly they are considering trading Russell.

Every talking head on TV and the internet has. Are you suggesting GS is going to keep him to play behind Curry and Klay?

Everything I have seen is simply their opinion/conjecture. I'm suggesting they are keeping him to play with those guys. Nobody is out there like "Damn McCollum and Dane can't play together" Russell is bigger than both of those guys. If Russell is actually a really good player they will be plenty happy to figure it out with him on the roster. Could he be traded? Sure but I'm not buying into some story he is coming here in some sort of wonky deal. Remember Russell CHOSE to go there.

Klay is not a small guy; no reason he can't play a good amount of SF with Curry and Russell in the back court, but they are going to be more vulnerable defensively to bigger, athletic perimeter trios.

Klay can play SF offensively, but his defensive assignment is much different. Before he had KD and Iggy to guard the best wing so he could either take the PG if needed or another wing. Now when they play teams with a good PG which is a lot of them he may need to be guarding the 6'8 wing instead because they don't have another guy to do it. They went from being able to pick and choose favorable defensive matchups to now potentially being forced into bad defensive matchups which is a big swing.

Don't disagree, hard to see them not taking a significant step back defensively this year (and they already took a step back last season, but just kept outscoring people).

I agree, Kahns.

But let's go a little deeper and forget about size for a minute. Russell is as poor defender at his #1 position, PG. Steph Curry is a pretty poor defender at his #1 position, PG. To the extent Russell fills in for Klay as the team's SG until Klay returns in Jan-Feb, the Warriors will experience a HUGE drop off defensively. When Klay returns, having him as the only good perimeter defender alongside Curry and Russell doesn't make much sense for a team with playoff aspirations. Moreover, it's far less than ideal on the offensive end as well to have two PGs playing together. People love to talk about Lillard and McCollum as an example that it can work. But it's not easy.

Bottom line is this. Russell doesn't make a lot of sense for the Warriors. Add in all the reports that the Warriors are interested in trading Russell and it sure seems as if the Warriors are shopping him. Whether he ends up with the Wolves or anyone else for that matter is an open question. The Lakers will certainly have an interest in Russell if they don't get Kawhi. That might have been one reason why the Nets and Warriors did this deal. The Nets needed to either renounce their rights to Russell or trade him for the cap room to sign Kyrie and Durant. The Lakers couldn't do a deal for Russell because they were waiting on Kawhi. So perhaps the Warriors saw an opportunity to extract something from the Lakers or the Wolves while Russell saw an opportunity to preserve the Lakers as an option while locking in a max or near max contract. Meanwhile, worst case scenario for the Warriors is they end up with a very good young PG who remains a valuable trade asset going forward. Worst case scenario for Russell is he's earning a lot of money on a grantees max contract as a starting guard for a good team and a great organization in a nice part of the Country.

I can see that, but they also set the price pretty dam steep. I am not sure I would give two 1sts for him even if it does include Wiggins. I guess I would have to stop and think about that trade for a bit.

I have a feeling they want a starter and a 1st, like Covington who fits that team well. Assuming they are entertaining the 3 team trade scenario.
