Tyler Herro just got a four-year, $130-million extension with the Miami Heat. Wow, good for him. Guy is a stud.

That seems a little rich to me. I can see a world where Nowell gives you (almost) equivalent production this season.

This deal surprised me too, Q. Just a couple months ago when Herro said he wanted to start this season, Pat Riley said "If you want to be a starter in this league, you need to be a 2-way player". Kind of harsh. Herro is an exciting offensive player and I think may even get better, but he is constantly targeted on defense and if you watch the Heat, you can see why. I suspect that Riley made this public comment to fire Herro up and convince him he needs to improve on the defensive side of the ball, and perhaps he sees some defensive potential there. But if I were a Heat fan, I wouldn't be very happy about $32.5 million invested in a 1-way player.

I was a little surprised at the number but not that much. It doesn't kick in till after this season and soon around 30 million will be what good starters are getting paid. Is Herro a good starter? Idk he is a 22 year old guy that came off a 20ppg fairly efficient season and has shown some level of improvement offensively every season. Ultimately guys that can do what he has shown to be able to do aren't gonna come cheap. What if Miami overpaid by a few million? What if Herro ends up becoming a Donovan Mitchell type player? Then he will become a value contract.

As for the playoffs I'm not sure how healthy Herro was and Miami had other options that at times were playing well. Miami is banking on Herro improving and staying healthy.

A guy Like Jordon Poole could be looking to make this type of money soon and Nowell has a path to maybe not quite this kind of money but a pretty healthy chunk...but he has to go out and play well this season to earn it.

I think the real question is "is he a starter?". He only started 10 games last year, and every depth chart I've looked at has him still behind Strus (although he did play more minutes than Strus last year). Herro's an exciting player and can get you points in bunches, but it seems Miami likes him better a 6th man. I've also wondered at times who Butler prefers at SG...he obviously has a lot of camaraderie with Max (fun to watch them flip each other off pre-game!) and it seems he might prefer the better defender who doesn't need the ball in his hands all the time and still makes over 40% of his threes. Maybe $32 mill is going to be the new standard for a 6th man, but it seems like an awful lot to me. I get that the cap is going up and TV money pays for much of that, but ticket prices are already too high (I just bought a couple tickets to the 10/28 laker game 2 rows from the top for $75 apiece) and soon only the very wealthy are going to able to afford to go to games. Can the cap keep jumping so much every season, especially when the economy ain't so good?

Herro is everything for that second unit and typically plays late in fourth quarters with the starters. I think the Heat smartly assessed his value as one of the premier young scoring guards in the NBA and were aware that he would have received that offer or better from another team wanting to make him a focal point. The numbers are what they are -- a representation of where the cap is blossoming to in the coming years. Some of us here have been saying this for a while, though.

I agree that "scoring guard" is an appropriate way to describe his role. And indeed that is an important one for a Miami team that doesn't have a lot of shot creators (outside of Butler). He isn't the most efficient at it (league average) and his defense leaves much to be desired. I just wouldn't value him as highly based on those two facts, but I can see why Miami values him given their lack of shot creators.

I think Beasley played more winning basketball down the stretch but replacing him with Brynn Forbes means I don't really worry too much about not having Beasley the roster. If we need a shooter call Bryn Forbes name. Just looking at their stats from last year it's not hard to make a case Forbes was a better offensive player that season than Beasley.

The thing you get with Beasley is elite volume....I mean he can get up a massive amount of 3's at a decent percentage, to the point where he almost rivals Steph Curry in this regard. Now of course Curry is a better ball handler, passer, mid-range shooter, finisher, and defender. But strictly as a 3-point shooter, Beasley is really, really dangerous. I don't quite put Forbes in his category.
