I thought that was a bit lame. Just blatantly hunting 40. He and the team needs to grow out of that shit. Not necessary.
Yes. Weird.
It's no secret that Towns is a stat-hunting guy. We've seen him nearly tackle teammates chasing rebounds in year's past. And I think stats affects the types of shots he takes at time on offense. One 40 point night seems sorta irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
But damn. He was so good last night. A huge part of the game was that Finch kept him in that 1st quarter despite the two early fouls... and Towns didn't get the 3rd one. It helped them avoid the recent trend of falling behind early in games.

He is such a great shot-maker. He is one of these guys that has God-given touch that I think is really hard to master through hard work alone.
One of the great revelations that Finch has uncovered with KAT is reducing his touches on left block post-ups and increasing his touches from the nail up to the 3-point arc. It's been harder to double him in that spot and it puts him in a triple threat position. Why it took 7 seasons to figure this out is beyond frustrating, but being able to finally unlock KAT in crunch time has made a big difference this season.

I personally don't care for it but if Kat got 40 he would of had the franchise record for 40 pt games. Now I don't care about that record but for whatever reason Kat did.
I'm happy we have a player that can get those types of "fake" franchise records. I also say it's nice to have guys like Finch and Pat Bev who can talk to Kat after they do something he did not like

You could see Edwards and Beverley look sideways at Towns and say something to him... followed by Town's saying "That's why I did it."
Even after the explanation, Beverley seemed to shrug.
[Note: Meh. Give me the days of Josh Okogie, Jarrett Culver and Treveon Graham trying to hit 1/3 of their shots. Much more fun than some guy scoring 40!]

The NBA trade deadline was February 10th. Malik Beasley is 21-49 (42.9%) from three-point range in the seven games he's played in since then. Obviously, that's a small sample size that is also boosted by his 6-9 performance last night.
Beasley's season has been inconsistent to say the least. We know he started the season in a slump -- shooting 32.7% from three through the month of November. He showed signs of life in December (36.5%) before laying bricks in January (32.7%). He shot 46.2% in the shortened month of February and hopefully he maintains some of that as we finish the season, but you never really know what you're going to get from Beasley. He has one NBA skill that is above average and it's hit or miss on most nights.
The appeal with Josh Richardson wasn't that he would be a better shooter than Beasley, but rather he would be an overall upgrade. Richardson is a much better defender, finisher, and shot-creator than Beasley is while also being an adequate perimeter shooter. When Beasley's shot is off, and I've illustrated that he goes through streaks, he provides absolutely nothing of value. Rather, I'd argue he becomes a liability when his shot is clanking off the rim.

Id rather have Towns going for 40 in a blowout win than Mark Madsen shooting 3s to get us more ping pong balls.

Still too soon. Still raw over that debacle.

I'm not saying we would beat GS in a 7 game series, but KAT is a huge problem for them. Maybe when Wiseman comes back that could change some, but they literally had no one who could guard him last night. He would average 35 against that lineup in a playoff series.

They do have perennial DPOY candidate, Draymond Green, though.
And smaller, savvy, physical defenders who know how to get away with contact have flustered Towns repeatedly in the past.

Thanks for getting the right stats Cam I forgot to make it 8 games including the GS one last night. Regardless Beasley has been shooting the 3 well. Beasley's overall value compared to Richardson is that he is still young having turned 25 in November. Richardson is sort of a we kinda know what he is and what he isn't although offensively he is more well rounded but you don't know what you are actually gonna get.
Let's also acknowledge that while Richardson is an adequate shooter (and absolutely brings more other aspects to his game) Beasley brings a lot more in terms of 3 point shooting than he does. Richardson has played in the neighborhood of twice as many regular season minutes as Beasley and has hit only 28 more 3's.* Beasley really gets them up and is a threat there. That can have an impact.
*that doesn't include playoffs.
Just to be clear I was just kinda joking about the early comp of Josh Richardson and Beasley so far but I was kinda making the point it will be interesting to see how various players that the wolves might have acquired do the next chunk of games to finish out the season as well performance in the playoffs. It also matters what some of the other Wolves players like Prince does. He has cooled off a bit from 3 but he is also hitting his 2 point shots and a high rate and generally scoring at a nice clip for a supporting player.
I think what we can agree on is that while some of our bench guards have been getting the job done at times the last stretch of games it would be nice to see them step up even more and make some more shots and for Beasley especially have more consistency in that regard. I do wish Nowell would get more opportunity.
