A report surfaced today that it's unlikely Collins is traded... referencing how difficult it is to match salaries in any trade right now.
Looks like he's going to RFA.
But somebody wasn't copied on the memo...

The Collins dream is not over until it's over, but the price tag might be going up. Last night he put up 27 points (11-15 shooting), 16 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 steals, and led the Hawks to an upset of the Lakers at Staples Center. It's going to take an All-Star or near All-Star to get him, but man would he look good next to KAT in our starting lineup.

LeBron is hurt and maybe they need a facilitator like Rubio to help them in the short and longer term. Unprotected 2030 1st and Caruso anyone? :D

Apparently according to Kevin O'Connor the hawks offered Collins for beasley and a first and the wolves declined. In case you were wondering what the value was.

Love that if it's true. I wouldn't give up that much either and I really like John Collins.

League sources say Atlanta is receiving significant trade interest for John Collins from the Celtics, Kings, Mavericks, Pistons, and Timberwolves. The Hawks want one young player and a first-round draft pick to make a deal, or a package of similar value such as multiple first-round picks. For example, league sources say Atlanta wanted Malik Beasley and a first from Minnesota, but the Wolves declined.

Assuming those sources are correct, then good for Minnesota in that they didn't accept that offer. That would have been an overpay, in my opinion, especially considering the position the Hawks have put themselves in. It's unfortunate that it's looking like the Wolves won't be adding an exciting young big in John Collins, but there will be other talent that comes available. Glad to see Gersson Rosas show some patience and resolve there.

Good for Rosas if, in fact, he turned down that offer. As Cam noted, there will be other talent that eventually comes available - if not before the deadline then during the offseason.

Interesting report. O'Connor is pretty reputable, isn't he? I see that he quotes "league sources" and that always confuses me. Either Atlanta leaked his deal, or the Wolves did? Or one of them gave a phony report to O'Connor. So, what would the motive of either team be for leaking this? I can't see why Atlanta would, but maybe the Wolves did to show Beasley they were committed to him. I'm just curious.
I don't think I would do this deal either, although I would have to think about it. Two reasons. The Wolves tend to be too cavalier with draft picks, and I don't know if I want to give another first rounder up. More importantly, the max or near max deal Collins will want would leave us with KAT/DLO/Collins occupying most of our cap space...I don't think that's good enough.
But I at least pick up the phone...

FNG - I've always regarded O'Connor as a reliable NBA reporter. Interesting question you ask about who leaked the info. I suppose the Hawks could have been the source, leaking it as a ploy to generate pressure from the Wolves high-end season ticket holders or corporate sponsors who might view the proposed deal as one that would improve the team and remove the negative image associated with Beasley. I agree it could be the Wolves in an effort to underscore their commitment to Beasley. Or perhaps it was Beasley's or Collins' agent. I'd like to know just for curiosity's sake. But regardless of who leaked it, I'm glad Rosas said no. On the other hand, like you, I'd have to think about it if I were in Gersson's shoes. For example, if the future pick were a fully lottery protected first rounder that converted to a 2nd round pick in two years, then I'd give it a lot of thought.
I'm not sure about salary match. It couldn't be a straight up swap of Beasley for Collins unless it were a sign-and trade deal, in which case Collins' contract would fall well short of the max. Otherwise, the Hawks would have to provide another player along with Collins - maybe Reddish?
