I absolutely think that if things go really bad this season, we should look to trade him. There isn't a single superstar in recent memory that didn't want to eventually get out of a stagnant/losing situation, so it would be best if we pre-empted his desire to leave and just pulled the trigger while we could get a shit-ton in return.
This isn't something I would have proposed a few years ago, but given the current NBA landscape, I'd absolutely be all for trading KAT if things don't appear to be moving forward in a positive way this season.

Interesting thought. Maybe it depends on what you mean by "really bad." But I wouldn't look to trade KAT under any circumstances until after the 2020-21 season. I think it's clear that this upcoming season will be a rough one and that the Wolves are lottery-bound. The Wolves' new regime really needs at least two full seasons/off-seasons to see if they can get something built around KAT. I'd want at least two full seasons to evaluate Culver, Nowell and Reid (our three most promising new additions this summer). Covington and Teague can bring good value in return at the Feb. trade deadline. And next June's lottery pick could be a big addition for building around KAT. Two years from now, KAT will still have 3 years left on his deal so teams that want him will have to trade for him with no ability to wait it out.
Historically, some of the biggest mistakes this franchise has made have resulted from impatience - impatience with Billups who could have teamed with KG for a championship, the impatience that led to the Butler trade.

My definition of really bad is 1. Winning fewer than 30 games and 2. No discernable improvement or impact from our last couple of picks, Culver and Okogie. And the odds are against us getting a top 2 or 3 "for sure" pick next summer, so I have zero faith that suddenly the answer to our problems lies in next year's draft. We always say that, only to be ultimately disapponted.

If you traded Towns, regardless of what the return (I couldn't imagine it being as good as you think it could be. OKC and NO practically own all the future firsts) the issue Rosas is gonna have is that he's gonna have to now rebuild this team around a player who let's be honest, he didn't want in Culver. His whole mandate has been to find a second star with Towns while hoping a 3rd emerges via the draft. Now he'd need 3 big time stars through the draft while fielding a team with Wiggins as a tank commander for 3 more years after this.
Rosas might as well keep his Houston area home because he won't be around much longer if he trades Towns.

He'd more be building around whatever the return is for KAT as opposed to building around Culver.
I'm simply facing reality here. KAT's value may be no higher than what it is if he puts up a monster season this year while still having multiple years on his contract. He WILL want to get out sooner rather than later if the losing continues and no one else appears to be getting better. I'd prefer we pre-empt the inevitable next offseason, but I guess we have a season to suffer through first!

I'm late to this party, but I'm really only interested in trading Towns if the No. 1 overall pick, ANOTHER potential All-Star caliber player, AND multiple other high-quality assets become available -- basically, a king's ransom and then some.
The Pelicans got Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and three first-round picks -- including the No. 4 overall -- when they traded 26-year old Anthony Davis with essentially one year left on his deal.
That offer doesn't even make me flinch for the 24-year old Towns and the four years left on his deal after this season. Better bring a hell of a lot more than that to the table and I'm not sure there's any team in the league that would have enough to make it happen.

A couple things.
My point in bringing up having to trade Towns was that if it's the worst case scenario that...it's not exactly THAT terrible. Cam you just outlined it even more.
What changed the calculus of the AD trade market for NO was they already had the prize everyone was hoping to get in the draft when they landed Zion. They had their player to build around. They had the player some people thought a team MIGHT trade in a package to get AD. So they basically could then take a haul of stuff to get back to help build up their roster. They didn't exactly have to focus on getting another star in return for AD. They did get a massive haul for him and like Cam said AD only had a year left on his deal. Towns has some flaws defensively but AD has had some injury issues that are troubling. The bottom line is trading Towns SHOULD bring a haul of assets back.

I'm extremely interested in trading a surefire #1 option for another CHANCE at getting a possible #1 option.
That's the Timberwolves franchise.
yeah... woohoo.

My thoughts are this team should be willing to trade every and all things not named Towns to get Booker and Russell. Then go from there. Time to be bold.
