One other note on the "character" vs. results angle.

We can judge results A LOT EASIER than we can judge character. There are too many examples of player portraying something very different publicly than who they were privately to list them all here.

I feel like KG being a jerk to some people is a bit different that what typically gets mentioned about "character" issues like not working hard and having addiction or legal issues. I'm not saying KG's negatives are trivial because there are plenty of info to say otherwise (he would be with the Wolves) but to me he has done a heck of a lot more right things than wrong but I'll listen if there are some examples of stuff I have either forgotten about or unaware of.

Oh. I agree totally. Character also includes working hard and all that.

I was just giving his detractors the benefit of the doubt...

I should have said I agreed with your point I was more adding to the conversation. For example I've seen so many people say they never have misread a guy more than they did with Darren Sharper.

While true... a few others might have also learned about the value of PnR defense, unselfish ball movement and hard work in practice paying off in games.

Also true, but wouldn't it have been great if he could have done it with the same class as so many of the other all time greats?

that really doesn't make that big of a difference. Being the dickhead who won a title >>> being the choirboy who didn't, because if we've learned anything about this team is that they overvalue character. Even when Glen won the lottery, all he wanted was a young man with a good heart and a good mind, Admirable, but concerning the mission at hand, misguided.

That statement sums up the difference between the way you and I think. Does basketball really mean that much to you? That it trumps everything else including personal character? Few want to win as bad as I do, but there are some things that matter more to me.

This is the NBA. It's filled with alpha male ass holes. If you can't get passed that you're watching the wrong sport.

Wrong, there are a lot of good guys in the sport.

There are just as many ass holes. There's a reason a guy like Melo says his wife is married to him, but not him to her because that's the NBA lifestyle. It's not a bunch of good guys like you believe. They live a certain lifestyle that is deemed normal by society, but in reality is very shitty to a lot of people.

There are bad people in every profession. I'm not sure how much higher it is in the NBA than some other profession. Lawyers are a profession that gets a bad rap but it's not all bad people there that's for sure. I'd be interested to see a study comparing those types of things across different professions. One of the reasons I like Lavine so much is he genuinely seems like a really good guy.

[/list]I am with you about LaVine. I hope he reaches his potential. I have no doubt he will work hard enough for it. I just hope we give him the direction to reach it.

I really wish KG and Taylor could get along. KG still had a lot to learn from Flip. He really had a gift with people.

Youth, wealth, and fame is a trifecta that puts a young man in front of a ton of temptations, whether it be drugs, alcohol, women, or shady business deals. That doesn't excuse poor choices and bad behavior, but these guys are in a little bubble that is not too dissimilar from young actors or musicians that find fame and fortune.

Yes. And remember, most of them have been fawned over since they were adolescents or at least before they could drive. And it's not just other adults treating them that way... for some... they're even seen as a meal ticket at home.

It's a crazy way to grow up and one that none of us can understand. It goes much deeper than what I'm mentioning here, including socio-economic, cultural, et al other factors that play into it.
