Re: The February 18th Trade Deadline is Nearing
The voice of reason is here. (Thank you Lipoli)
I like Dunn, but everyone needs to temper their opinion on him. He is 23 years old and having a breakout year. He is the shiny new penny. I still think D'Angelo Russell will be a better pro than Kris Dunn. Kris Dunn doesn't stay in college for another year and all of a sudden become the answer. He could turn out to be a great pro, but it is certainly not a sure thing. Compare the stats. Most think Russell is a failure so far, but he didn't all of a sudden get worse than Dunn because he went into the NBA.

Dunn's 21-years old, not 23, and he was damn good last year too. He didn't just come out of no where.

Yup, agree with you and Lip on this.
One of the things Rubio's critics always point to when looking at extremely high career net On/Off rating is, "well yeah, look how horrible his backups have been over the years!". Exactly! So here we have an opportunity to get what could be a great backup PG that could eventually, yes, challenge Rubio for the starting role.
This team has consistently fallen apart over the years when Ricky sits. So let's fix that problem!
(Of course, we never know how good college prospects will be in the NBA until they get there. Dunn could be another dud, but if we are drafting around the 3-5 range, he seems like the right target).

Good catch on the age. Still 2 years older and wouldn't have been drafted ahead of Russell if he came out last year even after 3 years of college. (thought limited due to injury - not a good sign either)
I am not saying I am against Dunn. I am just saying I wouldn't trade Rubio and plan on moving forward with him as starter. There will likely be bumps in the road.

That's where I'm at Bleed. It seems awfully speculative to trade Rubio for a PF or SF and put all our eggs into the Kris Dunn basket. Do people think Towns and Wiggins will be happy helping to potty-train a rookie PG after being spoon fed baskets by Rubio?

And no way to know if we get a top 2 pick I don't want to reach for Dunn just because we traded rubio

Devil's advocate: Might Towns and Wiggins be happy playing with an above average athlete at PG who can not only spoon feed them baskets, but get his own too?
I'm not in the "we need to trade Rubio immediately" club, but if an offer like Noel for Rubio came and we were for sure going to be able to draft Dunn, I think I might pull the trigger. I think very highly of Dunn. No glaring weakness with that kid.

Tyus may still develop into a serviceable backup point guard. We haven't seen enough of him yet to know. Let him develop this summer and he needs to get a chance next fall. Plus Zach keeps getting better at both guard positions. I'm not against trading Rubio, but I'd rather grab BPA when it's our turn to pick regardless of position. We just need another good player for our rotation. Hopefully one that can play both ends of the floor.

Absolutely.....IF he turns out to be good. 50% of lottery picks end up under-performing (70% of Timberwolves lottery picks!). Those are just the odds. Now obviously if you love a guy you think he'll end up on the right end of those odds. But we never really know. I just think it would be a big risk.

Rubio for Conley with the understanding that he'll reup with us. There's a Rubio trade I'd fully get behind.
