The Future has yet to be written.

I generally try to maintain a respectful tone on this board, but I vehemently disagree with Future and Cool on this one. Trading Ricky Rubio for Smilin' Wes Johnson is one of the dumbest ideas I've heard here.

"ESPN.com also reported this week that that Lakers, Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons are among the teams expected to pursue Atlanta Hawks free agent-to-be Al Horford."

If I'm Al Horford, I'd pick the Wolves over any of those three teams. I hope Al would too. Can players lobby each other? KAT must know him from the Dominican team, right?

Hmm...does the Pistons interest in giving a max contract to Horford an indication that they don't intend to try to keep Drummond?

I wrote a few weeks ago that I wasn't interested in giving Horford a 4-year max because it seemed odd to pay him the same amount as Durant was going to get. But now that there are rumors that Noah might get the max, I'm a little more interested in pursuing Horford.

Do the Lakers have the cap space to land both Whiteside and Horford? If so, that team could get good.

Russell
Clarkson
Ingram
Horford
Whiteside

. . . with Lou Williams and Julius Randle off the bench, and a coach guys actually like. Could be interesting in LA.

Here are the guys currently on the salary roll for next year:

Rubio/Tyus
LaVine/Dunn (though yes, he'd be playing more PG and pushing Tyus to the bench)
Wiggins/Bazz
Dieng/Bjelica/Payne
Towns/(Pek)

KG could also pick up his option. And we could pick up the option on Rudez.

So we've got 4 roster spots available. What free agents would you target to fit in there? The most obvious spot is the 4 and 5, which would move Gorgui to playing as the first big off the bench if we could get a guy like Horford or Deng. I'd really love to land a free agent like that, though I don't want Whiteside. Who would you want?

Yes, they easily have the cap space...with $40 million coming off the books from Kobe and Horford, the Lakers currently only have $26 million of committed salary, plus whatever the cap hold is for Ingram. Lou Williams is currently the biggest contract for next year at $7 million!

I see KG coming back. I don't see him giving up $8 million and I don't see him wanting to go out the way he did last season -- just sort of fading away. So that means we'll have only 3 roster spots. IF we sign Noah, Horford or Deng, we'll have two roster spots and not enough cap room to sign the best available FA shooters. Right now, we are starved for perimeter shooters. Thibs said you can never have enough good shooters and he has stressed the importance of improving our three-point shooting. That means he's going to have to pursue the likes of Dudley, Afflalo and Courtney Lee in free agency and sign at least a couple good 3-point shooters.

It will be interesting to see if Thibs ends up trading Bazz this summer for a better long-range shooter. Don't know who that would be.
