Psst, So does Payne and Flip doesn't know it yet.
I'm not totally convinced Payne is unsalvageable. He did not have a good rookie year and he's a little older than most guys picked in the first round these days. He wasn't as bad in AB in my opinion, and he seems to have a bit more of a defined role he could fill. It's not like we could trade Payne for a great deal anyway. He deserves another half season or more to prove himself. AB, I don't think so. Either way, these guys are depth (and we do need some depth), they're not the important bigs. The important bigs are Pek, Dieng, KG, and (hopefully) Towns.

I look at Payne and AB as just eating roster spots and cap space. You are either a player or a project. I would say these 2 are neither at this point.

When you have guys who came into the league with good potential (like AB, Payne), I think you really have no choice but to give them every opportunity to "make it". They're both here, we've made an investment in each. The last thing you want to do is prematurely cut ties before it's necessary. However, if you have a guy who clearly doesn't have the goods (Flynn, Wes), I have no problem moving on from them at the earliest convenience. Personally I don't think we're at that point yet with either of these guys. I want to see more of both before we give up and call the investment a waste.

Scary thing is, Cool, Flynn and Wes showed way, way more than Bennett has to this point.

We could have that debate. I thought Flynn was one of the worst NBA players I had ever seen.

When is the date for Bennett's option for 2016-2017?

Likewise the other way.
(At least Flynn put up 13.5 PPG / 4.4 APG in 28.9 MPG as an 81-game starter his rookie year. By default, he's leaps and bounds better than Bennett.)

1st round rookie deals need to have their 3rd and 4th year options exercised by the October 31st, the year BEFORE the option year begins.

That's what I thought. Unless Bennett shows something amazing nobody is going to want to pay him that money for next year so it's a one year trial. So if you really want to hold onto Bennett you gotta give him minutes this year and see what you got and unless you did pick up that option what is the point? He will be a FA. I don't see the point in holding onto him if you can move him for anything that could seem helpful this season or beyond.

Wes Johnson also was what 25/26 years old two years into his NBA career. Bennett had 2 years derailed by injury and not enough consistent burn to shake off rust and build a rhythm/confidence. Everyone called for budingers head until he got consistent court time and found a rhythm again. I think Bennett deserves one more year for sure.
