Yes, there are positives, but there are more negatives.
So what are people expecting? People are clamoring for Rubio now. Same level of player. People seem to want or expect Teague to be some star level guy never make any mistakes or whatever. I'm not suggesting the guy is awesome I'm saying the guy is solid. Mediocre starter? That's not a bad player. Good enough? Depends but man people are roasting the guy. I don't see it.
I guess I expect more from a guy we're paying so much money to. Some of this is on Thibs and his ball-dominant-guard offense. It feeds Teague's worst tendencies. I guess I want the Atlanta Teague, that's what I expect. It probably requires a new coach.
That's fair Q. I was hoping for more from Teague and I think even if there isn't belief in Thibs (fair) I think there is more there. He isn't gonna keep shooting under 40% from the field the rest of the season. Indecisiveness later in games and his reluctance to shoot 3's are the things that are the most maddening. Again we are talking about a solid starter type. If he didn't have some of these issues he would be a much better player. I also think at times it's worthwhile to assess a guy's play beyond his contract numbers.
I don't consider him a solid starter on the wolves. He plays defense for approximately 5 minutes of his on court time. He stops playing period, every time a shot goes up. If it wasn't so time intensive, it might be worth going back and calculating how many % pts he costs Wig with the last second shots. If Teague isn't feeling it get it to somebody else with enough shot clock to do something. Teague is a lousy passer as well, and rarely sets anyone up for an easy basket.
Maybe it is Thibs, and his lack of offense, but Rubio out shines Teague in every aspect of the game other than shooting (normally) and was making less money.
That might be a little over the top. He is averaging a career high in assists, so he is setting up some guys for easy buckets. Taj for example is well above his career average in percentage of shots from 0-3 feet. I imagine a lot of these attempts are set up by Teague.
I just want to see him shoot the 3 when it's open. His contemporaries like Conley and Paul have made the adjustment to the modern game by getting up more 3's. Teague has not done the same. I blame both him and Thibs for this.
Note the conversation went to Rubio...Ah the good old days. Remember when part way through his last season with the Wolves he was playing legitamately terrible and most people were willing to trade him for whatever. A few months Later Rubio finished up with a career best year as a shooter scorer playing for a coach that reportedly didn't want him. Thibs moved that guy for a first round pick (and cap space) that became Okogie. Yeah Teague makes more money and all that but George Hill has been traded at some point each of the last 3 seasons. Sure George Hill (more manageable contract currently) is more of a complimentary guy but Teague isn't some guy nobody would want.
Back to Thibs...are we sonsure he can't get more out of a guy like Teague in some way shape or form? I think you COULD make an argument either way and not be out of your mind. I'd lean towards another coach getting more of a positive out of Teague and the entire offense in general but again look at various players that have done well under Thibs. It might take some time for Teague and this new group to get on the same page.

Maybe Teague gets all those assists because he's nearly always the last guy to touch the ball, correction the ONLY person to touch the ball, before the scorer gets it. :) Seriously, I agree that Teague needs to take those many open threes that it declines to take as he instead dribbles for 15-20 seconds in and out of traffic before putting up a highly contested two pointer or passing a grenade to one of his teammates for a rushed, highly contested shot. Like you, I blame both Teague and Thibs. That combination of Teague and Thibs will help put the Wolves in the lottery when the season ends.
I blame both the system and trague. We see rose and jamal crawford and even butler do this as well.
The difference is rose moves with purpose and looks to attack right away. Butler is an excellent iso player and jamal will settle for a mid range as soon as he gets space.
Teague is a lot slower in making a decision on what he wants to do and looks to probe and probe until he find something. But he just isnt a gifted passer like a rubio or stockton. Hi isnt a true scoring guard like a rose or irving and doesn't have a pull up game. That makes him limited. Thibs should have seen this by now and call for more plays for towns or wigs in the post than iso and probe for teague.
When tyus is in the game, they run more sets for others as obviously tyus is very limited in creating offense for himself. Thibs seems to have lots of faith in teague creating offense by himself but teague dont look comfortable with it.
Teague is a good player and a starter in the league. But the system Does nit bring the best out of him.
