By all accounts TC and the entire organization have a great relationship with Naz. So I’m sure they’re in constant communication. The Wolves are in a better position than any team in the League to know what Naz wants and needs. I have no doubt they’re talking with him on a regular basis.

It’s clear that TC’s Plan A is to re-sign Naz. Plan B is probably a sign-and-trade to facilitate Naz going to a team that wants him but can’t or doesn’t want to use $12-15 million in cap space. If Naz wants to go to another team that’s not interested in a sign-and-trade, then the Wolves will know that and be able to implement Plan C - i.e., redirecting the money that Naz would have received to sign a free agent with the MLE. The Wolves can control the time table. It shouldn’t take too long for the Wolves and Naz to agree on a package or decide to move on to Plan B or C.

Yeah, there's no question there interest on both sides to get something done. Somebody talked about how unusual it is for a free agent to be staying in town to practice with guys he may not be playing with next year, but I think it shows how much Naz wants to stay. It looks like they could sign him on 1-year deal and not go into lux tax land next year, but any substantial long-term contract would force TC to unload big contracts in 2024-5...and I just don't think he wants to put himself in that box. In addition, I can't imagine Naz taking a 1-year deal when there will certainly be teams out there who will offer him more.

If TC drafts one of the many big man options at 53, I think that's the death knell for Naz. But if he doesn't, it might mean Naz is still in his plans.

I agree, Doper. I don’t see the Celtics swapping White for Naz and I wouldn’t swap Naz for Brogdon. Swapping Naz for Smart is a very intriguing possibility. But I don’t see that happening.
"Swapping Naz" is kind of a misnomer... Naz has complete control of where and how he wants to go somewhere.
Actually, Naz does not have complete control over where he goes. There are team that won’t have cap room to sign him. There are other teams that might have the cap room, but would rather not use that cap room to sign him as a free agent given other free agent targets. A Naz sign-and trade is a very viable option for the Wolves if they find something they like.
Would there be any incentive for Washington to do a sign and trade with us, assuming they have the capspace to sign Naz outright to a contract we are unlikely to match? If we lose Naz, we might want any of the following assets: Tyus, Monte Moore, Delon Wright or Gafford. I think Morris or Wright are available but they may not want to give up Tyus or Gafford without some sweetener.

This is actually the move I am hoping for. I like Naz, but the move that makes sense is a S&T to fill out some of the other areas of our roster. Particularly a backup pg and/or someone who is actually able to defend at the 4 and spot minutes at the 5.

I may be in the minority, but I prefer to keep NAW over Naz if it becomes one or the other. Backup bigs can be found in the scrap heap for vet money. Young wings who can defend and hit the corner 3, not so much. NAW will also be much cheaper.

A S&T of Naz and a decent 3-4 year deal for NAW would be great if TC can pull that off, and overall better for our team long-term if we are running it back.

I came up with a couple trade ideas I'll post later.

Looking forward to seeing your trade ideas, Future. I happen to view Naz as more than a back up big. I think he’s developing into a highly versatile big/forward. His handle is stellar and a rarity among bigs. The end of last season before his injury can’t be overlooked. The way he came on late reminded me of the way Chauncey Billups came on before the Wolves idiotically decided to let him go in favor of Brandon.

However, we need to be realistic about what we can afford relative to the team’s needs and the approaching 2nd apron in the 2024-25 season. I believe strongly we should retain Naz if he’s willing to stay for a salary that allows us to to stay under the luxury tax threshold next season. I think that means the Wolves can pay him up to around $14M in the first year of a new contract. Nevertheless, he might want to go somewhere that gives him a better chance at a larger role and I can see the arguments for moving on from Naz in favor of other priorities. The one thing I can’t accept is letting Naz walk for nothing. If we don’t re-sign him, we need to work really hard to orchestrate a sign-and-trade that addresses a priority need.

When a team actually pays and or offers Naz money that reflect they believe he is a starting level player thanks when I believe it will actually happen. I’m not saying it absolutely won’t but I’m simply not convinced a team really believes in Naz that way. I’m not convinced the Wolves will have to outbid teams much over the mid level to keep him. That’s all. I won’t be upset if I am wrong but that’s my take and I like Naz quite a bit.

I sure hope you’re right. It would be great if the Wolves could retain Naz at no more than $12M next year.

I know Naz is a bit unique and still young but name a young big that wasn't already a really good starter that got paid much more than the mid level the last like 3 years.

It seems like the main reason to re-sign Naz is to give the front office more flexibility and trade options moving forward. A $10-13M salary slot can be pretty valuable in piecing together a trade. It also gives the Wolves some flexibility if they decide to move on from KAT eventually, knowing they have a cheaper, middle-class version of KAT in Naz.

My nagging issue with Naz are his horrific On/Off numbers over his career. The sample size is too big to ignore at this point. The problem is there are other advanced stats that suggest he's a pretty damn good player. And we know he can punish small-ball lineups and exploit mis-matches. Kind of confounding to me.

I don't view NAZ as a good substitute for KAT, at least yet. KAT can pass and shoot much better and KAT gets doubled much more than NAZ. KAT has generally produced very good plus/minus numbers over the years and NAZ hasn't. I think NAZ is a good guy and I'd like to keep him, but I wouldn't hesitate to trade him if doing so helps the team overall. Eventually if guys like NAW, Minott, Miller, Clark develop to their potential, we aren't going to keep them long term or we'll have to trade away core players to retain them. If NAZ could recoup us some decent draft capital (a first or 2-3 seconds), or net us a potential starter at point guard like Tyus, I think we may want to cash in.
