Aussie, the combination of Ant and Lamelo looks lethal and may be even better than we hoped it would be. I have really liked Ant's energy level on defense, especially for preseason.
That's good to hear regarding Ants energy.

I have no doubt about the Melo and Ant combo, it. Could be downright historic. I just want to see Ant fully tap into his 2 way ability, that's how he becomes truly great

I only saw the first game, Aussie, but I agree with the others who are commenting favorably on Ant and Melo on defense. Not always effective, but they are both working hard out there. It makes sense after all the "it's all about defense" comments they have made...they had to back up the words. Now we have to see if it lasts. I agree...if Ant puts in this kind of effort on defense and LaMelo helps him expand his catch and shoot game, he has a chance to move up into that SGA/Luka/Joker/Wemby tier. And that would be terrific for our squad.

I doubt Ant becomes a "2-way" star, as hardly any of those even exist anymore.

Jokic - It was almost shocking how ineffective he was against a banged-up Wolves team that just kept on puncturing the paint against him in the playoffs as he stood there like a statue. He's a liability on that end without a healthy Aaron Gordon next to him.

SGA - Usually gets assigned one of the weakest offensive players on the opposing team to guard.

Luka - Total sieve, and similar to Jokic, someone the Wolves repeatedly exploited in the 2025 first round of the playoffs.

Giannis - picks his spots defensively, although his sheer length still makes him a net plus on that end.

Wemby - might be the only guy that is truly becoming a two-way star, but again, his freakish length and agility are unlike anything anyone has ever seen in the NBA.

Brunson - Has three guys in Hart, Bridges, and Anunbody to protect him on the perimeter. Otherwise a total liability.

Many of these guys have rings!

All of that being said, Ant definitely needs to increase his defensive intensity this year. He coasted in 2nd or 3rd gear on that end for most of the regular season, ostensibly because he was taking on greater ball-handling responsibilities. That's part of the reason, but I also just think he's not wired for it. I'd be happy if he just gets it up to 4th and 5th gear a little more often. But that ain't happening every minute he's on the court.

Pretty much.

I think the ultimate goal should be more in the SGA mold. He cares enough in team principles and has enough pride in iso defense... that even though he's usually assigned non-threatening players, he's solid defensively.

Summary... he cares.

True, and Q also makes some good points. And I have all 5 players he mentions ahead of Ant, either because they are elite 2 way players (Wemby and Giannis) or a dynamic offensive force and not a liability on the defensive end (Jokic is not considered a great defender, but he had a defensive rating of 111.5 last season). I agree with Q that Ant is not likely to become a 2-way star, but by becoming an efficient 30+ scorer while upping his effort on defense rather than mailing in his defense in January games against the Pelicans, I think he has a good chance of moving into that elite upper tier this season.

The final defensive play of the game Ant doesn't get taken out of the game (at least so far he hasn't been) Both Towns and Brunson were getting subbed out on defense and in on offense in the final minutes of games. I've seen SGA get subbed out on defense at the end of a game before. Maybe that is something they may ultimately do with Ant in the biggest defensive moments when you have a timeout and can bring him back in on offense, especially if Cody with his length can really provide something there. It's on Ant, Ball and others to play well enough on defense that they don't get taken out at key moments. It has been encouraging to see the effort so far, and I do think Ant is a step slow right now after sitting out 2 full months to recover from his knee issues. Hopefully as he ramps up, that energy level only increases.

Ant has always been a clutch defensive player and has won us multiple games with his defense, something that gets somewhat forgotten since it's his clutch offense - both the struggles and successes - that has received the most attention. His top-end defensively is elite. I just want him to get to 80 or 85% of that level for longer stretches, that's all I ask. Just get back to being more helpful than hurtful defensively during the normal course of play.

I finally watched the Indy game yesterday and have a couple comments:

1) It's so much fun to watch Ball play at both ends of the court, but especially as a PG. His handle, instincts and passing are the best I have ever seen in a Wolves player. Ant is going to thrive playing next to him.

2) I am more concerned than ever about the non-Rudy minutes, and if he is hurt and misses several games, this season could turn into a disaster. Yes, Joan has clearly expanded his offensive game and that's a positive. But he looks lost and overmatched to me on defense. He's listed as only an inch shorter and 10 pounds lighter than Zubac abd Huff, but he looked like a kid to me next to both of them. I'm hoping for some big improvement as the season progresses, but I think we are just going to have to survive the non-Rudy minutes this season. Man do I hope I'm wrong, but I didn't see a guy ready for big NBA minutes in this game.

That's true, I do think as long as both Rudy and Jaden are on the court together the defense can be dialed back a bit by Ant. It's the minutes where he's out there and both Rudy and Jaden are on the bench where I'd like to see Ant really dedicated to upping his defense. Maybe it's too hard to change your intensity level based on who is on the court, but those are the moments we need that defense the most.

I think a big key for Ant and the team is to be more intentional in earlier parts of the game to turn the screws up on defense and get some easier wins. If this team can have more 3rd quarter or early 4th quarter instances of pulling away the team will be better off. That's what the best teams do.
