I'd rather Gary Payton II than Murray (even though Murray is mocked much higher) as Gary is not an alpha scorer like Murray, but sure can defend well and pass the ball.
I sure hope we can learn the lessons that KMart and Bazz have taught us. Players that are ball dominant and can't defend are not a good fit in our regular rotation.
He's not even ball dominant at Kentucky so I'm not sure where you're getting that idea from. Here's the thing: I feel like you haven't watched much of Murray with the way you talk about him and you have these ideas about him that you feel are right in your head, but they don't match with what's happened on the court. I'm not taking a jab at you here because there's a ton of prospects and not every game is accessible to everyone. The Murray to Waiters comparison is way, way off, though.
Murray plays mostly off-ball at Kentucky. Ulis runs the show. Part of what makes Murray so good is his ability to come off screens, square up and drain threes. That's part of the scouting report with that guy. If you ask almost anyone who follows Wildcat basketball, they'd also tell you that Murray isn't handling the ball
enough. That seems to agree with what I thought about him too in that his point guard abilities offensively haven't been displayed enough this season. He's not being used the same way he was during the 2015 Pan Ams where he shredded the competition with scoring and facilitating despite being years younger than practically everyone there.
Calipari also has a track record of misusing guys so that they'll develop in other areas of their games. Most recently, we saw that with Towns, but also with Booker. Did you see any of that ball-handling and passing ability from Booker in college? I sure didn't and I watched just about every game of theirs when I was infatuated with Towns.
Point being, I think you're misjudging Murray and overvaluing other guys.
Well, I'm not sure if he's mis-using them or simply views them in roles that are more narrowly defined because he knows that they can dominate in one or two facets of the game and has just as much talent covering the other facets. For example, who needs Murray to handle the ball a bunch when he's got Ulis? Who needs KAT to hit jumpers when he's got Booker? Who needs Booker to handle the ball when he has experienced upperclassmen to do it?
But point well taken. One thing we need to do is look back at a player's prep/AAU/national team body of work and see what else they have in their tool bag. This seems to apply to Kentucky prospects more than most, so I am open-minded to the idea that Murray has more to offer. But boy, those jumpers coming off of screens look NBA-ready don't they?
(still a little worried about his size and defense).

I like Poeltl as a prospect too, but trying to figure out how a college big man will translate defensively to the next level seems like a really tough projection. And even if he does eventually become a good NBA defender, it typically takes YEARS for big men in the NBA to develop on that side of the ball. It's almost a guaran-damn-tee that he will be a liability as a rookie, and most likely the next season too.
....and therein lies the biggest problem with rookies. They all suck defensively (for the most part). Even KAT has had his struggles and he's one of the best rookie bigs in the past 20-30 years!

I'm all for taking BPA if we think we can get capable role players in free agency, but if not i'd look to trading down either for 2 mid round picks or a late lottery pick and a capable role player.

Despite all the question marks.....I take this guy and don't look back.
While I LOVE the idea of drafting a 2-way player, that breed COMING OUT OF COLLEGE is non-existent anymore. Scoring gets you a scholarship....and later a big contract. As Q pointed out on bigs, I will expand to ALL high-caliber draft picks. Since most of these guys are coming into the NBA at 19-20 years old, they simply haven't had the seasoning to develop these 2-way skills everyone drools over. Defense takes time, and is typically the last skill these kids learn. I think you take the best kid (skills, size, athleticism, etc), and then you work with him. Simmons is in my opinion the most talented player in this draft, and I don't even see Ingram (whom I like a lot) as being close. Simmons ability to get up the court like a guard, his vision, size, rebounding, etc is already elite. Many worry about his 3pt shooting, but we again need to remember that he is a PF in the NBA. He will probably never be a dominant long-range shooter, but he will more than likely become adequate. Put that with his other skills, and you certainly have an all-star type player...maybe more.

Yep. I agree with everything you said here even though I still have Ingram as the better prospect. I'd still be really excited and satisfied if we somehow landed Simmons. He's a rare combination of superb athleticism and skills that doesn't come around often. I also believe he's a good kid who works hard at his game despite all the nonsense that's out there floating around about him.

A couple thoughts:
Murray is a good passer. I can see someone wondering if he would pass enough but he isn't so one-dimsional like a Martin or Bazz (different spectrums offensive dimensions) where they aren't really guys that can create for other guys. Murry looks like a guy that would have no problem skill wise getting another guy the ball. Other than this team needing 3 point shooting he could end up being an embarrassment of riches. I think there should be concerns about his D but I am not convinced he is absolutely a liability there though.
After watching the Suns man handle the Wolves on the last game adding size sounds pretty good. Poeltl has plenty of size and is skilled. Could the Wolves be able to solve some of their size issues via FA even with some solid bench guys? Yeah that's possible but adding a legit 7' players sounds pretty good too. As long as he can wall up some and box out big dude and while not being a liability on offense that sounds pretty good. Obviously you would hope for more than that out of him but I think you get what I mean. He SEEMS like a safe pick to at least be worthwhile but he also has upside.

Q, KAT had the best defensive rating in college basketball last season. I do like to look at defensive rating (KAT & AD were both #1, Draymond Green, Crowder & Dieng had top ten D-Ratings), defensive win shares, steals and blocks, plus reach, lateral quickness, athleticism and IQ in trying to project defensive ability. I have read multiple reports calling Poeltl's defense good or better (he has a pretty good defensive rating and reportedly shut down Okafor.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocV7v0W5IA8Here's a video of Okafor vs Poeltl. I'm still doing my homework on him.

I agree with Hicks123. To expect a 19 year old kid to have a super well rounded game is silly. As a freshman Murray is one of the best all around offensive players in the country. He can score in a multitude of ways and has a sweet stroke. I think he will be a very good all around offensive player. I also think he has the athleticism to develop into a solid defender. I would be happy to have him and maybe he can push Ricky a bit at PG eventually.
