I was waking through doing this a few hours ago and realized I need to find out what the most of a raise they could pay him this season as well as next season. I haven't had tome to look at Larry Coon's CBA FAQ to get an answer. My guess is that to get Nowell to agree to an extension they may need to use some or a significant portion of the mid-level to do it. I don't think Nowell is gonna sign for just a couple more million like Vando money when a year from now he could be an UFA and a bunch of teams have money to spend. Meanwhile the Wolves would also have lots of cap space next offseason so they could offer him plenty of money. In a somewhat related note what is the most money Dallas can actually offer Brunson? I think it's been posted but I forget. It may not matter because it seems like he wants to go to the Knicks but it COULD be a similar situation to the Wolves next offseason which is the fear.
The League player max is the only limit on what Dallas can offer Brunson. He's a vet and the Mavs have his Bird rights. The Mavs actually have an advantage over the Knicks in that they can offer a 5th year while the Knicks cannot.

So...in theory if Nowell blows up like Brunson did we could offer him up to the max while also still having a really low cap hold? Still haven't had time to to dig into the CBA yet. Lol

This is the right call, in my opinion. I think Naz Reid's days in Minnesota are numbered and there's a chance they work out an extension with Jaylen Nowell either before or during the season.

It's pretty obvious that's what was going to happen with Naz. He is now eligible to be traded. I need to look up what the rules are for a team that trades for him could do in terms of an extension. That could increase his value to another team if they had an idea what kind of number they could get him for on a longer term deal. If his new team could do an extension Naz might be wise to consider something thats a nice raise but not a lot. His next contract if he plays well he would still be fairly young and cash in.
Nowell I think it's obviously possible he is a long term piece to the roster. Making him a RFA makes things complicated. What exactly is he worth? What if a team takes a flyer on him and offers more than the Wolves want to pay and they lose him this year? Like you said maybe they agree to an extension before FA next season. I got to read up on the CBA tonight!

I'm worried about the Nowell situation. But I'm a worrier at heart

I see it the same way, Cam. I'd be surprised if Naz isn't moved this summer. As for Nowell, the Wolves will have ample opportunity before next summer to work out an extension for him.

I am fine with Naz being traded or walking. I don't see him as a long term difference maker. I am a bit concerned with letting Nowell become an UFA next year. If he breaks out next season, we'll have to pay market value to try to keep him and not have bird rights to match which tends to suppress offers.

Bird Rights essentially allow teams to sign their players while operating over the cap. Minnesota would still have Jaylen Nowell's Bird Rights. He just wouldn't be a restricted free agent, therefore the Wolves wouldn't have the ability to match another team's offer sheet. That's what you're referring to.
