Re: NBA Rookie Watch - Edwards v. Others
I think it's exciting how Edwards has grown over the 3 games. Now as I say that, I take very little seriously from exhibition games. But after game one I wasn't sure if he had his trunks on backwards he looked so out of place. Game two presented a giant leap forward and last night another good advancement. Can't wait to see what he looks like in a couple months. And don't dismiss McDaniels before he fills out. Lots of twigs have been great NBA players. He needs to get some minutes in the G league and hopefully he can help before the end of the year. He appears to be a great athlete with skill. I'd love to have that to work with.

I'm with you here Cool. These preseason games are preseason games but it's the data points we have so far. Soon we will have plenty more to go on but for now it's what we have.
Mcdaniels has enough length and quickness I don't actually worry that much about his strength although obviously he can improve there. He looks like he can guard wings and his length could be a problem for then in that case. I'm gonna throw out an AK 47 comp for him physically. That dude was a skinny guy that moved so well I remember seeing him in SL before his rookie year. Of course we would be fortunate to get a player of AK's caliber (especially if McDaniels would also stay healthy) from McDaniels but he really is pretty physically gifted and did something with it in preseason. I actually think his floor is higher than some people expected it to be.

McDaniels needs to add 20-30 pounds without losing any athleticism or fluidity before we can really even think about him having an impact.

Remember what Giannis looked like his rookie year? Talk about a twig. It will take some time but he will eventually get stronger. The thing that surprises me the most is his handle. For a guy that long he can dribble it. And 7 blocked shots in his limited time is no accident.

The most encouraging improvement of edwards
in these 3 games for me is the defense. He was getting beat backdoor and was slow reacting his first game. But he has really looked good on that end the lst two games.
He gets down in a nice defensive stand. Move his feet and body well to stay in front of his man. Has quick and active handa. He fights tru screens. Doesnt look lost when defending off the ball and contests shot. No wow possesions outside of that chase down block but played basic and strong defense.
He has all the tools to be an excelent defender. I think that is a very important development.
His offensive efficiency can improve as he learn his spots in the nba and gain more experience. The talent is obviously there on that end and Im not worried about it. Players improve on that end the longer they play in the league.
But if he can be a plus defender from the start, that guarantees him a long nba career and possibility of becoming a superstar higher. Players dont improve significantly on d throuout their careers
They are usually either good at that from the start or bad at it. They get better on that end but there is no big jump there. If Edwards can start out as a plus defender then the higher chance of him developing into an elite one down the road.

I'm with you guys, the most exciting thing to me is that he's flashed in almost every area. Watching Mike Schmitz and other scouting videos I wasn't surprised by how well he could pass on a fast break but he's had multiple nifty passes in halfcourt sets as well. He's obviously still raw but his feel for the game in general is much better than I expected.

Who was that guy that Cam championed for a while? He was drafted by the Pistons and had a real similar body as Edwards? That would be my worst case scenario.

Had to look it up - Stanley Johnson from Arizona.
