Yesterday: It doesn't matter what KG makes, the cap is going up and we don't need the cap space anyway!
Today: Great deal! Saves the Wolves money to keep some future flexibility!
Spoiler alert for when Hummel gets signed for 2 years 8 million:
Great deal! the cap is going up and we don't need the space anyway!

And the Wolves did themselves a favor. Rather than merely trading Bud for Rudez, they structured their end of the trade as taking Rudez into one of their smaller trade exceptions, and then trading Bud to the Pacers for nothing in return, thus creating a brand spanking new trade exception of 5 mil that is good for one year (not that we'll ever use it, but it does create potential flexibility for any future trades).
[Edit: To answer your question, lloyd, the matching rule for trades does not apply for a team that is under the cap, as long as they remain under the cap upon completion of the trade. The Wolves end had to fit the matching rule since they are over the cap, which it does. ]
Can you ever think of a time where the Wolves used a TPE?
Yeah, for Rudez about a day ago.

I am fearing the exact same thing, although I doubt they go that high. Hummel is an end of bench guy, and they aren't suppose to see guaranteed deals period. Which is why Flip will sign Hummel to a 2-3 year deal and tell us how much he brings to the team.

Flip: So you're not interested in AB for the same price as Bud, Larry?
Bird: Nah not really

Budinger - age 27. PER 13.3, WS/48 .085, 1.2 VORP
D. Rudez- age 29. PER 8.2, WS/48 .061, -.01 VORP
G. Taylor -age 74. $4 million richer. Smiling broadly and planning to redecorate his living room.

I'm gonna be honest. Those stats don't make Bud look like he's 4 million dollars better than Rudez.

Here is a short highlight video of Rudez against the Kings. It gives an idea of his skills which are better than I first though after watching some more clips of him. His passing is pretty good. He has some fire to his game I like that. I think there is a good chance he sticks or a team makes a move for him. There is a chance he could be a little better next year after getting used to the NBA game. He is intruiging just because of his length and volume loading up on those 3's and he has a year's worth of NBA games to say he can hit them.

Highlights vs. the bench of the lowly Sacramento Kings... with the Kings up double digits late in the 1st and early 2nd quarters? Meh.
Those Kings sure are good at closing out on shooters. Yikes.
[Note: Gotta admit... a deep bench guy demonstratively clapping for the ball 28 feet from the hoop after making a whopping two wide open threes is gonna give me some venting material this upcoming season.]

As for moving Budinger because he wanted to...
1) Taylor saves money, as mentioned.
2) It continues the Wolves recent goodwill tour for veteran NBA players looking for better places to play. Barea. Brewer. Mo WIlliams. To be fair, it shows other veterans around the league that Saunders doesn't like to dick them around and will work with them when possible. Conceivably, this goodwill could pay off down the line. Maybe. Possibly...
